Timber Fascia & Soffit For New Build House

    Hey Lads,

Im building a house at the minute and I was thinking of going with a micro-porus painted finish on a timber fascia & soffit (black in colour). I looked at Canadian Red Cedar but have now decided to go with a painted finish. I do not like uPVC as I think the trims at the corners look poor and anyway I like timber more!

I wish to find out/get your opinion on how a vacuum impregnated softwood with Tanalith E type preservative compares with Iroko as regards shrinkage/expansion, durability against rot & how often it needs to get a coat of paint (would love to get 8-10 years between maintenance intervals). Any advice/experience appreciated

Its my first post on Boards.ie so hopefully its in the right location & I get lots of interesting and relevant replies!

I am now thinking of choosing Iroko over the vacuum impregnated softwood as I think it would last longer. Holes drilled/nailed in the softwood to fix the members would probably expose untreated timber. Anyone with expeience/advice for a long lasting painted finish on an Iroko Fascia? What type of primers are there out there, etc? What time frame should I expect to get between maintenance intervals? How long will Iroko last if it is maintained once every 8 years, house is in an exposed location but not near the sea? Is there much shrinkage/expansion in Iroko (Ive seen gaps in Cedar fascia & they do not look great, they had a stained finish)

I've used Iroko fascias with marine ply soffits. I treat them with the product I'm PM'ing you with. It's not a varnish so it doesn't crack and peel and it just needs a brush on coat every 3 years or so. My garage doors are made of it too, still the same as when I hung them 18 years ago.

Hey Tom, thanks for that. I'll look into it

Tom, could you also pass on that name to me please too, I'm looking for a suitable product for timber cladding preservation.
    many thanks
