antivirus 8 removed but now no ms updates xp

i manually picked out that nasty antivirus 8 malware and ran malwarebytes to clear to clear the rest of it out from the 6 user accounts from an xp home machine. Now i cant run windows update. Page not found on if8. I tried on chrome and firefox. Same thing. I checked hosts in etc and that looks clean. I will do a reformat…

I will do a reformat if i have to but that was done less than a week ago and it takes half a day to get all his software back on again. Any ideas?

You're still infected by something. Not being able to update Windows is a classic symptom. Update & run Malwarebytes in 'Safe Mode with Networking' if you haven't already done so.

If you're still infected then try the Eset Online Scanner as it can often pick up bits that Malwarebytes doesn't.

Are you sure that your hosts file is clean?
