Working in a youth project and were looking to get a set up so groups/bands can record their music.

We have loads of instruments/iMac/Microphones/keyboards etc etc, anytime we want to record something we need to hire out a studio so were looking to do it on site.

Have a bit of funding to spend before the budget kicks the bollocks out of us and want to make sure the money is spent correctly as its probably the last time we will see any money for this kind of thing.

From what (i think) i know i was going to go with pro tools and an mbox soundcard after that i'm a bit lost - will this do the job for been able let groups record their own music ?

    Please & Thanks

Sounds absolutely fine! Pro Tools is an amazing DAW and you'll find the M-Powered version packaged with the Mboxs.

You should note that you'll only be able to record a few tracks at a time with the smaller Mboxs. This should be fine if you're going to multitrack most of the time but you will need to use a mixer before the Mbox if you intend to mic up a drum kit etc. This will also mean that you won't be able to adjust each drum mic's level/ panning if they're grouped to a stereo mix for recording!

You'll need some monitors and headphones to allow recording to be, well... monitored!
There are great units for fantastic value if you look around. BTW the internet would be your best bet for this sort of craic. Try Digital Village who will ship for free to ROI if the order is over 300 quid. Also if you emailed the sales team and explained your situation I'm sure they would do some sort of discount for you. They're also great for helping you find products that would suit your setup/ budget. (Forgive the use of such a horrible word!)

Emm, I'm really starting to ramble aimlessly here, so hope this might help! Let me know if you have any other questions/ problems.
Would also love to hear other peoples opinions on getting started as I'm not long in the game and claim to be no expert!

ah right, counds good! If you have a little extra cash to play with it might be worth your while looking to get a nice control surface for mixing etc.
The M-audio ProjectMix I/O is a great entry point for pro tools surfaces, you can actually find them quite cheap on Adverts.ie

Heres a nice one, I paid a lot more for mine :P
