I've a really obvious question but I can't find an answer:
Can I treat my 3 mobile internet connection as secure for the purposes of things like bank transactions and so on?

Sorry if this is answered somewhere obvious on here but I did read the FAQ and do a search.

Any advice ye can give me would be great.

Generally yes, but not necessarily if you use a mifi unit instead of a simple huawei dongle.

However wifi problems are nothing to do with 3g networks or 3 themselves.

I would say so, but check with 3 first to make sure its encrypted.

it is secure . make sure you have anti virus up to date . the purchase pages are usually secured themselves with the ss layer . once you see the security lock symbole on top or bottom of the page so that should be fine . even the wifi, it is safe .
wouldnt trust 3 mobile themselves though . I mean their service . they laur you by their offers , but then after sell service , over minutes and their bills all inaccurate . pain in the neck trying to sort things once they get the money.

Three probably won't be able to tell you anything about site encryption, that's up to the website to implement, not the ISP. If you're on an encrypted site, then it's secure. If you're not, then it's not secure.

    I can well believe it.
I'm actually getting the dongle and service free as part of a course I'm on. I'll still have to be careful that 3 don't try to claim I went over my usage when it comes time to give the dongle back.

Thanks all again for the help.

You can check your usage by logging into My3 on their website

    Short answer is:

    3G/HSPA Wireless connection is secure.

The longer answer is that it isn't. Given sufficient resources nothing is.

HTTPS is normally secure. But if someone has poisoned your DNS (drive by bad website), then you can be connecting to a fake Bank site that connects to the real one. Everything looks and works perfect (as your page IS from the real site), but all details are captured.

This works on a fibre connection. Nothing to do with Wireless. So the major threat is not the 3G/HSPA (which can be broken, but no criminal will bother, your PC is an easier mark) but not installing stupid stuff, fake codecs, stupid tool bars, opening bad attachments, having scripting & remote content enabled in eMail program etc...

User Education, not which ISP method or AV program you use is the issue.
