97 seat ibiza, driving along then felt the steering pulling from side to side. drove on a bit.but when changing gears the car did not respond. Pulled over but when i restarted the car and put it into first gear, the car would not move and there was a grinding sound as i pressed the accelerator. any ideas on what it might be ? car will neeed to be towed to garage ( €100) so if it is something expensive to fix might be better to just scrap it.

Agreed, and it was probably making noise for a long time before it broke! Pay more attention to your car OP.

Was there a loud clicking noise coming from it for a while beforehand when turning corners? If so C.V joint is a likely culprit. Could also be diff failing in the gearbox but check driveshafts first.

thanks for the advice ( and the dig :D). if it is the cv joint, how much approx should it cost to fix ?

Cheapest way out is to get a secondhand driveshaft from a scrapyard. it's easy to replace on the ibiza because you don't have to drain/refill the gearbox oil. Where are you located? Might be able to source you the part if you're in the Dublin area.

thanks for that. according to the missus ( her car) she just noticed it today for first time with the steering pulling the car side to side getting to the point she could not control it. ironically, car sailed throghu its nct last week. am in santry and car is parked up at northwood.
