2000 euro for foglight & diesel filter in Dublin, 140 pounds in Belfast!!!!

ok, so last week BMW dealer told me that it would cost 2k euro to

    1. change a foglight (300 euro)
    2. change diesel particle filter that needs changing (1700)

    car is a 2006 BMW 730d Sport.

    A non BMW mechanic (who worked for BMW main dealer for 10 yrs and has all the Bosch/laptop diagnostics and the BMW technician certificate) in Belfast did the work for me for 140 pounds as follows;

    1. change foglight (I bought part myself for 20 euro) cost 70 pounds to fit as bumper has to come off
    2. regenerated the diesel filter, said there was no need to change it, that when it goes car would lose power and then change the filter. cost 70 pound! he said BMW just recommend it to be changed after 4 years regardless of condition.

so 140 pound for a job that BMW dealer wanted 2k for. Just as well I checked around. these dealers are ripping people all.

Best of all, I got the car back hovered and washed and handed back immaculate

Guy who did the work is Mark Hamilton, Auto Technic, Montgomery Rd, East Belfast , ph 02890 799194. Dead sound.

Thread title and the subsequent thread show that you are not comparing like with like. Also if BMW recommend something is changed at 4 years that is what a dealer will do. Fair enough you saved a few quid but what costs €2000 in Dublin you did not get done for £140 quid in Belfast.

Where did you get a foglight for a BMW for €20 btw ?

    70+70+20 is not 140 btw.

Plus as already stated you're not comparing like for like. It like saying an old beetle costs £250 in the north but a new beetle costs €30000 in Dublin.

What you got was a patch job using second hand parts. Hardly comparible to the job BMW would do in Dublin

Regenerating the filter (what does that involve? pressing a button on a laptop?) isn't the same as a main dealer replacement with a new part. Ridiculous comparison.

I got the foglight from parts dept Joe Duffy Motors

purpose of my post was to tell people this guy is doing good work at good price.

In fairness to the OP, i've no doubt that the BMW dealer:

i.) Wanted to unnecessarily replace parts and

ii.) Was charging extortionate labour rates.

Doesn't change the fat that the OP isn't comparing like with like, but it's still a useful story IMO.

I'm sure had to gone to a non dealer garage in the south where they had done the same thing the price compared to Belfast would not have been all that different.
But had you had a new foglight and DPF fitted by BMW in Belfast you would have been close to the original quote of 2000.
So to know for sure you need a BMW quote from Belfast and an Anybody's garage in Dublin.

i think the point is that dealers are a complete rip off. i went to an audi dealer to get a number for a part and he wouldnt give it to me. when i asked ti buy the part from him he said €200. Im getting the same part delivered to my door within 48hrs from the uk for €120.
I think thats says it all about main dealers

Yeah, Charles Hurst wouldn't give me the part codes for petrol tank straps for my Carina II...so I just tracked some 2nd hand ones down from McGuigans in Forkhill for £5 the pair instead of >£60 new
A shower of ****es dealerships contain...

You can do a forced regeneration on these dpfs by blasting down the motorway when engine is nice and hot, alternating on WOT and cruising. Fact is, if the DPF really were so blocked as to not be able to regenerate themselves, then a replacement is the only option (other than chipping the ECU.
I wonder whether the OP does regular motorway driving or stop start city driving, (in which case the DPF wont regenerate effectively). These Beemers are built for the Autobahn!
Well done in either case OP, sounds like you averted financial misery!

I am well aware changing a foglight is like for like ;) Thanks for the info though.

Recently when looking to change my car I got a totally rediculous price from local bmw dealer, back street garage around the corner had much cheaper cars.

    Somehow I doubt this.

I would personally recommend buying a gelatto tool off ebay backing up your ecu to your laptop by connecting to the cars OBD port and following the onscreen instructions.

Then download a program called ECU safe which allows you to remove the DPF system from the ECU... upload the new ECU to the car and no more troublesome DPF issues

Then whip off your exhaust and bash out de filter and you have a nice free flowing exhaust.

I did this to my car (not a BMW) and I have zero mechanical skill. Just did my research... total cost of €45.

    that's value;-)

Who do you use? And did you get a new parts or repaired?
    Somehow I doubt this.

    Lets see

i call bull**** i priced a new genuine foglight for my 5 series last year and was told they where 130 euro from a bmw dealer, of course i went to border motor works and got a fake one for 30stg. so how the **** did you get a genuine fog light from joe duffy so cheap?

Ah my apologies I did say I did to a non-BMW in my post.

I was merely advocating the benefit of research before you splash the cash. I imagine though given your username that people using galetto tools are doing you out of business?

Out of interest what would your fee be for removing the DPF from a Peugeot? can it be done for a BMW?

if you went into bavarian BMW in belfast you would have been advised to get a new DPF and your fog light would have been more expensive

Hate these sensationalist stories of north vs south prices, once you actually read into them you find the truth

Exactly, except the OP tried to turn it into the usual crap with prices in the north vs prices in the south

Well I was quoted €600-700 to fit and spray a new m sport bumper down south, got it done for £100 sterling in newry! there is a direct comparison for your. The €600-700 was the cheapest quote I received down here!
