I would have posted this in a news-clippings thread but I'm
not sure if we have one.

Yet again media goes scaremoungering splashing airsoft guns
all over the front page, and using words like Crime/Weapons/Underage Kids etc etc in other words.....the usual.

    Grrrr

Same old same old really but the quotes from the public are a bit funny...using the gun for self defence again heroin addicts and to stop people jumping over your garden wall..jesus christ:pac:

Calling it an airgun can't be right, can it? Im sure you could make a claim in regards to that front page alone.

I dont know the shop at all, I thought it was the local Headshop in Limerick that used to sell cheap crap and high prices , but the story says the shop only opened a few days ago.

I thought with new regulations that you needed to be a registered retailer, and also there was restrictions on the
location of stores etc (ie not slap bang in the middle of a busy city center)

Sounds like it could just be temporary, with it saying it wants to get the Christmas trade by advertising them as gifts.

the licensing system is not in place yet

but if it was it would stop a shop being in a location like this and having such items on public display

It would be nice to get a postive story in the Local Rag for a change.

There was a brief story shortly after LAC opened up that
was postive so would be nice to get another one in, especially when when now in Limerick there is
the UL airsoft society, mwairsoft, and a skirmish site all
close by and having a postive effect on people.

I know someone working for the paper but have not spoken them in years, may see them over the christmas and see what pull they have on getting a Postive story printed at some stage.

What a combination of tripe and poor shop management.

I'd suggest the IAA send a letter to the editor but someone would need to go and check out the shop first.

If the laws were enforced this wouldn't happen, people have a right to be annoyed when its blatantly in your face like that. Does anyone know a number we can call for things like this or is it just the gardaí?

Does anyone know if we can do some sort of joint law suit against papers that do this sort of thing?

It is after all damaging the rep of legitimate businesses the length and breath of the whole isle.

Doing so would attract much more attention from the media I'd imagine.

These articles are toothless, they end up sending new customers to retailers if they are read at all. The 'issue' they address has already been legislated for it is just yet to be enforced.

Given the economy and the media attention it is drawing, I doubt these sorts of articles will pick up any momentum.

    True enough......

Sure I changed the post, I posted before I read the whole article

In fairness - it's not the papers that are the problem - in fact they can be a very strong ally with some reasoned and articulate informative education and dialogue.

It's the muppet retailers who just wanna make a quick buck. I bet the retailer in question couldnt have had more advertising even if they tried. All we are doing is contributing to the hype and nonsence.

"Some of the guns discharge co2 gas" You would think they were firing tear gas.
What ever happened to editors , proof readers or at least knowing what you are writing about ?If I did my job with as little attention to detail I would be sacked within the week.

I'll be down there next weekend to cover a football match. I must wander over toward Foxes Bow at some stage and find it. It's not like that's a big area to be looking...

Odds-on the "AK47 for €339" is some POS, not worth a third of that, and this guy is another of the short life "get rich quick" merchants that like to strip-mine the sport for everything they can, then leave it in tatters.

As J.D.R. said, it's probably some fly by nighter trying to make a quick return from the Christmas market.

It's a shame the legislation hasn't been enacted to curtail this sort of thing, but I sincerely doubt we'll see it any time soon given the government are somewhat concerned with more pressing matters than a small fringe hobby/sport community

The IMF; International Monetary Fund, or Impossible Mission Force.

Actually, neither would be too pushed about a fring hobby/sport.

As I said, I'll be down covering a game. It might be worth a nosey in while I'm still dripping with camera gear since they seem to be so liberal with who they allow in the store as it is.

real story should have been about the ridicules prices there charging.

Come on guys what do we expect thought, unless it has cute animals or children good news very rarely sells papers, we make an easy target and that is never going to change.

Interestingly i do agree with some of the piece in that they shop should not be at that location and how it is displayed, but the airsoft community has been proactive in actually in bringing about change to stop this but again i do not think there really going to care about that.

Yes facts are wrong information is sensationalized. we're not the only area that has these issue with the media and it has been going on for a long time and tbh will not change, we just have to live with it.

    From their website:

"These guns often attain muzzle velocities between 150 and 650 ft/s and rates of fire of between 100 and 1500 rounds per minute."

I would just like to point out that the IAA have had no contact with this retailer regarding the legal responsibilities of an airsoft retailer, nor would we condone such a location for an airsoft shop.

We feel that such a flippant attitude as displayed by this retailer has the potential to damage the credibility of all those who have worked to secure the sport of airsoft in Ireland, and potentially undermines any work past or present to promote airsoft as a safe activity.

Planning on heading in their Saturday morning for a Nose about the place,
not sure exactly where the shop is in fox's bow but its a tiny little street.
I cringe to think of the attention the place is getting from our Local tracksuit wearing wildlife.

I'll be doing the same. The game is at 1pm, so I'll either stop by in the morning or after the match.
I wonder would it be worth bringing a chrono?

Just saw it myself in the star, in fairness to the retailer the shop isnt exactly on a high street tbh, its a bit off the beaten path but still in the city center. It doesnt look like a head shop at all and only looks from the pic to stock airsoft items. Not the most professional set up but it DOES SEEM like they have at least tried to have made and effort? Shame that even though its out of the way its still very visable what they sell from outside, a little discretion would have been good. Must get in there myself for a nose about soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,404 ✭✭✭ricka

Tiny little shop apparently.Opened by a couple of Polish guys. The biggest mistake they seem to have made is openly displaying the rifles in the front window.
One of the Polish lads who works for us is down in Limerick tomorrow,so he's going to try and have a word with them and direct them to the IAA.

Just to add to above,I know someone whos called in the shop and they are well aware of the 1 joule rule and selling to over 16's only so as such I'm hoping their implementing it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,612 ✭✭✭bullets

Yeah just got a text from the Mrs. she says the place is tiny and almost smaller than our box room at home. Good to know its not the head shop.

Well if you check thier site (airsoftguns.ie) , again a bit of discretion would have been nice but however, they seem to be serious? The likes of Ares and socom gear on there? Hmmmmmm. ?????

Personally I like the idea of an airsot shop in Lim (we aint spoiled for choice like ye lads from the shmoke!), at the moment its only MWairsoft online but a physical store is handy I just would like to see them get a bit of cop on in regards to public perception.

just heard a bit about it on live 95fm,,the reporter was asking people in the street what they thought about it,,all negative i'm afraid, shocking, disgraceful, against the law etc etc etc.
however the reporter did say that airsoft was only allowed if under the 1 jouile limit and was legal.
maybe the owner was a bit foolish to display items in window, due to the attraction of hoody type scumbags and ill informed members of the public who know nothing about airsoft and real firearms (a bit like the minister for justice i would think)

I took an extended lunch break today from work
(well I walked out the door at Lunch and have not gone back yet) and paid a visit to the shop.

Its TINY. Its basically a small window and a door about 2-3m Long and about 2m deep. You can see the entire contents of the shop through the window. While this may look bad, I'm not sure if they can actually do anything about this as literily there is barely enough room to turn around or to have more that 3-4 people in the shop. If they covered the glass window they would not have any natural light or be able to see out.

There is a sign on the door about not selling to under 18's and needing to be accompanied by an adult.

The guy working there was very friendly I was chatting to him for a while, he was familiar with the laws, he knew about all the brands and we chatted about Ares, JG, KJW etc etc

He had an A4 sheet printed out similar to the IAA leaflet
that he puts in every gun he sells with warnings not to have them on display in Public, Transporting, safety and warnings about the fines and being jailed, and there was a mention of the CJA act. Also he uses plain brown paper bags with no logos or anything.

He also has a chrono in the shop to check guns.

There was some nice stuff there, a limited selection,
some of the springers looked actually nice! and he had
a stock of hard cases also, He had Co2 ampules, Gas, and Mad bull branded BB's
I saw safety glasses, but did not see full face masks. They said for now
selection is small but depending how things go they may have that sort of thing.

I had given him the IAA URL he said he was reading the site last night and told him about the upcoming AGM.

All in all I was pleasently surpised. Only fully grown adults entered the shop while I was there, and there were lots of passer by looking in.

There was a bunch of Knacker Kids with their Paws pressed up against the window staring in. They made no attempt to enter the the shop at all which was strange. (I reckon they must have tried before and were refused entry)

Only bad points I could see is that everything could be seen from outside but not sure what the owner can do about that. and also its on the same street as the local headshop which kinda draws the scobes to the general area.

I bought a Socom 24k gold plated 1911 which is superb
for 179 Euros! Much better than my other Army Branded Gold 1911
(Pity the mags on the two are incompatible)

just saw this post, I walked in the store about an hour ago there was a few scumbags in there asking if they brake one of the guns will the owner repair it for free  they then left when they found out he didint have what they were looking at in stock, there were a good few other scumbags standing outside staring in the window. But besides that the guy in there seemed pretty cool he was telling me about the difference between electric and gas powered airsoft guns, its a very small store inside can only fit about 4 or 5 people at most. Only downside to the place would be its location next to the headshop and lots of knackers seem to hang around on that street but everything inside seemed to be proper and good quality

For the life of me I cant remember if he had large cases,
I only remember a stack of Pistol cases, the black plastic ones that have the chrome on the edges.

I went in last friday for a look,,all his stuff is good quality and the guy seems to know his stuff also.
A bit small but if he gets enought sales he might expand,or so he told me.
would like to see the windows mirrored or something that would not display items to the public,,it does attract the wrong kind of people.
there were a few scumbags and young lads having a look but the prices are probably too high for your average joe scum thankfully.
other than that it's a very welcome addition to the city,,good luck with the venture.

on the same day i saw 2 knacks on cruises street waving orange glocks around the place,,these can be bought from one of those cheapo shops in william street but are not in the window,,they also have a broom handle mauser for sale also in orange,,full metal and a few others in blue, red etc.
