Pedalbox gone in Polo

Last week I was doing a driving lesson and gear changes became extremely difficult, I thought the clutch was gone, but then I don't know much about the mechanical side of cars. When I got home I showed it to my Dad and he said it couldn't be the clutch cause if it was it would be slipping. He then brought it down to our local mechanic and he said it was the pedal box that was gone. He took it in, kept it for two days, welded it up and charged me a hundred euro. Fast forward two days later and the same thing started happening again. My dad is after talking to the mechanic again, he wants to take the car in for a week and put in a new pedal box. I would have preferred if he had just done this in the first place as opposed to doing a botched job, he is going to charge me for parts and labour for this fix, am I right to be p1ssed off and does he have a right to charge me again for doing the same job. Also does anyone have any idea how much this might end up costing me?. Thanks.

He should really refund you the hundred euro, if he refuses to just get him to do the work and pay him the full amount less 100.

Its not an easy job to weld well given the location of the damage but a good welder should be able to handle it and its the quickest cheapest fix.

So a replacement pedal box will set you back around 120euro to 180euro and you need a couple of replacement shear bolts for the stearing wheel (they have to be drilled out) a replacement link for the break pedal as this also has to be broken to get the old box out and I seem to remember there's a link at the bottom of the steering that might need replacing. A good bit of the labour is in removing the steering column and replacing it, which isn't that easy as all the work is all at an awkward angle and the bottom of the dash has to come out. I'll get shot down here but I'll stick my neck out and say you'd be lucky to get it done for €300.

afaik the lupo had the same problem and I found loads of info in lupo forums.

That sounds way to cheap - did he take out and refit the pedal box at that price?

I can't be removed unless the steering colum is taken out first ;)

But if it doesn't completly shear off at the weak point then I think it can be bent back and welded.

I no that is what i tought when i got the job done he put a metal plate on to were it cracked and welded the crak and the plate all i no is he had to take out the stering cloum to do the job as i seen it out i felt bad only paying 30 as it seemd like a lot of work.

But he has now goten loads of work from me and ive told family and friends to go to him as he does at great job and and good prices

its a common fault on them - get one from a scappy and do it yourself or anyone who is handy with a spanner - try post up on the adverts job site - someone will do it for a nixer

Did one of these 2 weeks ago. No point welding these as it will only be a temporary fix. The steering colum does have to be removed to fit it. New pedal box from VW is around €45 and you will also need the brake pedal clip as mentioned above. A competent mechanic should be able to complete the job in around 2.5 hours. If it hasn't already been replaced the clutch cable should be changed at the same time as old/stiff and badly adjusted cables are part of the reason the pedal box fails in the first place. The 2 shear off bolts mentioned above can be removed easily with a hammer and chisel as they are not that tight and can be replaced with ordinary m8x25 bolts and washers. Make sure to locktite these however just to be sure.
