7K For a DSG Gearbox!!!!

    Hi..

I have a 2007 VW Transporter with an Automatic Gearbox. The gearbox started acting up this week, dropped it into a VW dealer, they just came back with a quote of 7200 to replace and install a new one!!!

The van is probably not even worth 7k....

Is there anywhere that may be able to repair them or is it worth trying to get one from the UK?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Trying a breakers is probably your best option. Traynors up north have a big selection of stuff.

How is a 2007 gearbox shagged to the point of it needing replacement?

What kind of miles have you done on the gearbox?
I've a DSG A3 myself and really hope nothing ever goes wrong with it! I've a DSG service coming up at 40,000 miles.
Did you gearbox get a service and oil change each 40,000?

Sorry to hear your bad news. My sisters manual VAG gearbox gave up last month but was only 1200 to refurbish. Any chance someone could refurbish it for you?

Jaysus you'd get a decent car for that!

What has gone wrong with the VAG group lately? All I hear now is how unrealible gearboxes/engines can be. And how shockingly expensive they are to repair.

You hear more about them, because there is a ****e load of them on the road.

I've a VAG car which has done 130k on the original gearbox and feels perfect, original engine, original turbo etc. It has just been looked after reasonably well.

DSG is still fairly new technology, so is going to be an expensive fix. I had a GTI with DSG box in with me yesterday, and the owner said his had been replaced under warranty. Is there any service bulletin on them?

Jasus so much for the VW dealer any monkey could price and fit a new unit . Did they not open the box or even offer an opinion as to a possible cause. If i was you I would try an auto box specialist like Pat Cassidy at Auto Tranz 01 4299944

I have a Mk5 GTi and I deliberately avoided getting a DSG. At first I was going to get one but when I dug a bit further I got talking to a VAG mechanic who warned me off them completely. He said that if they do break they are very very expensive items to repair/replace and from what he'd been working on they were going wrong a lot more often than a standard manual or auto transmission.

The more complexity the greater chance of failure. Cars are not as simple as they were in 1990

It has 100,000 Km on it, looked after very well, not sure if the gear box ever had a service (its our delivery van, I don't drive it myself) but from what I read the DSG can give problems.....wish I knew that before I bought it!

I have already got someone to do it for 6K.....still bloody expensive....

Cheers for all the advice....anybody want to buy a van?

I'm sure loads of them run brilliantly for years but when you've got a mechatronic unit (probably over €2k for the part) with two clutches, eleven different sensors and as many actuators you're bound to have a lot more very expensive failures than a conventional gearbox. I was buying used so I really didn't want to have to have thousands in the rainy day fund in case it suddenly started acting up.

I bought a manual GTi over the DSG too. Not very helpful to the op though!

Surely a rebuild would be cheaper! Every component cant be broken.

VAG gearboxes are rubbish. Had mine go at 78k km and mostly motorway driving to boot...

At current exchange rates I'd definitely be looking at getting some quotes up north for this. The total cost of the repair wherever it's done should make a long distance transport seem like a minor issue if there's a saving to be made.

I think we should add "VAG" to buzzword bingo.

    Who's with me?

Normally it's the (very expensive) mechatronic unit I mentioned that fails. That should be replaceable separately and it might be possible to get a rebuild of it (although I'd be very wary if it didn't come with a lengthy warranty).

    Alarm bells here....

I'd check your service history if it has been getting serviced at a main dealers and the gearbox has never serviced i'd be kicking up a big fuss.

AFAIK the T5 Transporter had a normal auto box and not DSG, most auto gearbox specialists should be able to repair. The most recent facelift T5 Transported with the 2l engine is available with the DSG gearbox.
