I need a piece of advice. I want to take up a martial art in Galway but I cannot decide which one. I'd like it to be one of traditional martial arts and effective on the street for self-defense. I thought maybe karate kyokushin, judo, taekwondo or brazillian ju jitsu. Does anyone know any good club or school? TY for any info

Just go try them out and see which one you like. Personally, I don't worry too much about what's street effective, as there are just too many what-ifs to be able to say what is and isn't.

I also think you only need a few sessions to decide if you've found the right place. No you won't have experienced all the art has to offer, but you get a good feel for the people that train there and how they train. You have a fairly short list, try them all and pick the one that suits you best.

Something like Karate or TKD won't give you much for self defence but that's not something I'd worry about anyway. There's loads of different martial arts around Galway so why not try a few out?

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts training can be found here:
    www.pointblankgym.com

There's dedicated begineers classes running all the time.

As said by Tim i'd say join Point blank gym as you will have skills in all ranges of a fight, striking, clinch and grappling and would be in the best position to realistically defend yourself, but aside from that its fun and you would most likely love it so worst case scenario would be that you'd learn some new skillsa and get fit while having fun..

As Doug said, why not give 'em all a try.

Self Defence shouldn't be your primary concern when taking up Martial Arts, unless your pretty dumb and walking yourself into sh*t all the time - thankfully the vast majority of us don't., 'nor indeed have most been involved in a row in their whole adult lives.

TKD gets a hard knock here, but its probably one of the styles with the largest amount of participants in the country. As indeed are most of the Karate style's.. Which would indicate to me that they're hugely enjoyable.

Your spoilt for choice with very good Judo clubs in Galway too, if competition is your thing its hard to avoid it in a Judo club.

And as Tim and Cowzer have suggested Point Blank Gym.. A fantastic club, with a great bunch of guys. Some of whom post here.

I have a K-1 class in my gym on Fridays but we incorporate Muay Thai Training as well as lock, holds, chokes, strangles, ground work etc.
    Its good fun but effective.

    Hi,

Why not try Koryu Uchinadi Kenpo-jutsu (Karate), www.ku-galway.com.

Quick video on home page to give you a taste of the system.

But give everything a go and see what suits you and what you enjoy.

Any questions contact details are on site.

    Cheers

If you want to learn something that actually works in a real fight then you need to look at something that has proven itself through combat sports. Lots of traditional styles have little or no sparring (point sparring doesn't count) or grappling/randori.
MMA, Judo, BJJ, Muay Thai, boxing or kyokushin karate - each of those has been proven in the ring, cage and street to be effective and the learning curve doesn't involve a lifetime of kata. If you like traditional stuff and formal type training then by all means look at the more traditional styles but if you want to get be able to look after yourself quickly then look into the combat sports route or something like Krav Maga (make sure that it's either IKMF or KMG - avoid Commando Krav Maga, it's not authentic).
Taekwondo is an enjoyable sport to watch and do but it's not a realistic style for self defense or fighting in a street scenario - there is no full contact continuous sparring and the focus is on kicks based on the competition point system. Bujinkan training involves no sparring, grappling or pressure testing of any sort, just choreographed techniques which is fine if you want the traditional route but not if you want to learn to take care of yourself quickly.
