I think you misunderstood what LabMouse was suggesting. With the SD card in the camera can you still see the photos if you do a preview (usually pressing the button that looks like a "play button")? If so connect the camera to the PC via USB and then try and copy them off.

If you can not see the photos via the camera and the PC is still suggesting you format the card it will be trickier. There is one hit and miss solution*, let your computer format the SD card but make sure you only let it do a quick format. Once that is complete your PC should see the card, if so download and let recuva scan the card for recoverable files.

Once photos (if any) are recovered from the card, format the card in camera.

    * weigh up how important these files are to you before formatting as it could ruin any other chance of recovery (e.g. paying for professional data recovery).
yes i can see the pics if i connect camera to computer with usb. I can copy them to my pictures. I just wondered why i cannot read them from the SD when SD is in the computer.

    Thanks for suggestions

It's always best to format the card in the camera rather than the PC. As soon as you have uploaded the photos to the PC, I'd recommend that you format the card in the camera, then take a snap, transfer the card to the card reader slot in the PC and see if you can read it.

    took this from the maual:
ZUsing Memory Card or Internal Memory with a PC
    • When taking pictures using a Memory Card or internal
memory that has been used on a PC, reformat the
    Memory Card using your camera.
    • When formatting, a directory (folder) is created. Image
data is then recorded in this directory.
    • Do not change or delete the directory (folder) or file
names on the Memory Card or internal memory
because this will make it impossible to use the Memory
Card or internal memory in your camera.
    • Always use the camera to erase image data.
    • To edit image data, copy or transfer the image data to
the PC and edit the copied or transferred data.

Another reason to upload from the camera via USB cable rather than physically transfer the SD card to the PC....

On some cameras any photos that you took in portrait mode will not get rotated to the correct alignment if you copy them from the card straight into the PC so it's better if you (1) install the s/w that came with the camera and (2) always transfer the photos by connecting the camera to the PC with he USB cable that came with the camera and then do the upload.

Just in case anyone finds this thread

if you have a Windows 7 mobile device the SD card is only to expand the memory of the phone it is not meant to be swapped in / out of the phone

I got a new sd card and the camera will work ok on it. Should I format it if it works without formatting? It is a TDK 2 GB

AFAIK most SD cards are pre formatted with FAT32 so if it works already there is no need to format no.
