Just watched The Departed for the second time last night...I first saw it when it came out in the cinema.

I think its a great film but on viewing for the second time now I have a different view about the ending.

    Just wondering what others think...
At the very end when Dignam (Mark Whalberg) kills Sullivan (Damon), is he acting out of revenge or is he too a mob man?

The first time i simply assumed it was revenge...but now i'm having my doubts, would Dignam not be the kind of cop to get the evidence against Sullivan and bury him that way?

Maybe I'm just on a "question every ending" buzz after Inception!!

I think you're reading too much into it

Your first assumption is what I'd say also

    Wait until you realise
    They're a gay couple.

You see in the film how over-reactive Damon gets when called gay, or how uncomfortable he is in the porn theater and how hes apologetic to the girlfriend...

Then later when he's getting the apartment, he says he has someone else who can cover the rent too - Wahlberg. He got in the apartment no bother at the end without breaking any doors - because he lives there...

It's actually an interesting theory and one I hadn't considered but I think if you were correct they would have made it more obvious but it would work as a theory.

The theory falls down over the fact that Costello wanted to know the rat in his unit. If Dignam was on the payroll, surely he could have just outed Costigan over a phone call.

Dignam just wanted revenge for Costigan & Queenan imo

I would have thought you were reading too much into it aswell but there are equal merits for both sides of the arguement.

    Im pretty sure that he
kills Sullivan because of the letter that Costigan gave to the woman, presuming it said "Bring this info to Dignam" or something along those lines...

then why bother wearing the booties etc when killing him. If he lived there, he would have stuff there anyway. what would the point be.

I think the gay theory is nonsense (and I would have thought a joke from that poster but ya'never know) - the other one might look good on paper for a little while but it's a lot more likely to be what you originally thought it was.

    + 1

Without any doubt in my opinion

    But what a film...

that act is nothing more than cold, hard revenge, anything else is over-analysing it too much

The act is also nothing more than the reason
    Wahlberg's
character is even in the film if you compare it against Infernal Affairs' ending. It's one of the few parts of an otherwise good adaptation that I didn't appreciate.

    Also thought
    he
have could pulled out another movie from Infernal Affairs 3's plot and thus be more relevant to the story instead of just a prop for a Hollywood ending.
