I'm thinking of joining the British Army as a soldier,I'm interested in becoming a biomedical scientist. Is this option available to citizens of the Republic of Ireland?Has anybody any experience of this?
Also what recruitment office up North is easiest to go to as I'm all the way down in Tipperary.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You could probably do some form of general science..but I don't think they would cater for something specific.

the British Army has a BioMedical Scientist trade - its open to those aged 17 - 33 with whatever the Irish equivilant of 5 GCSE and 2 A level passes (including 1 in a science subject). as far as i know ithe trade has no 'extra' nationality requirements.

it has a structured promotional path based on attained training levels, and may be sunject to a 'golden hello' recruiting bonus.

simply go to the British Army Soldier Jobs website, and hit the 'medical' tab towards the bottom of the page - the TA BioMedical Sci job is at the top, the Regular Bio Med Sci is the second one down.

    Hey there.

I'm not going into specifics, but I'm a Dublin lad who went for this job with the BA. I know SeaSlacker (sort of, ish) but I don't think I'm the guy he's referring to.

All I can say is hang on for a few years, mate. There are very very few on establishment. Right now it is an enlisted rank - so like any of the 60 trades within the army, you do phase 1 (bootcamp) and the off to trade related training (Portsmouth then Northumbria). Yes you do need a leaving. Yes you do get a degree and your HPC accreditation. But no - no you won't get a job within the next 2/3 years. Currently over established, and they are in the middle of a cycle so no recruitment til 2012/13. Definitly nothing til April 2012 anyway.

Yes, you are fine for nationality.

Ring Belfast AFCO, they'll probably tell you to ring Enniskillen Army Careers Info Office.

Do you have a biomed qual. already btw? AMLS accred would go in your favour.

You are, but you have to give details of every family member and friend that's Irish for background checks. I tried to join 6 years ago and that was the case, I had an uncle that couldn't be traced and it caused all sorts of problems. Didn't go through with it in the end.

Well I've been through it recently and I didn't have to give any family details outside of my siblings and parents.

Maybe it's different now then. That was 6 years ago, had to write down all relatives and close friends.

Sounds like it was DV (developed vetting) you were going through rather than the basic vetting. DV is trade/placement related

Analyse pathology samples such as blood or tissue in order to diagnose illness or disease.

Why was this an issue,is he some kind of IRA sympathizer or something?

Don't mean to be rude just curious as to why they refused you as a result of your parents marital status.

No; BMS is an enlisted post. In the end, they thought that I'd be better suited as an Officer. I still have my ADSC cert and my A grade to take up any enlisted post if it doesn't work out.

Took me a while to get it - I was thinking that his father must be some kind of unsavoury character... Me, naive?!
