    Hi Jay,

I'm a 3rd year in Irish Studies. The course itself is brand new and as of yet nobody has graduated yet. When I started the course there was no Strand A or Strand B to choose from in 1st year. The Irish language modules were mandatory up until the end of 2nd year and then you chose whether to drop Irish completely or keep it. Is it that split in 3rd year you're referring to?

Having dissected your post a little better I think I understand what you're asking. No matter what strand you choose, you'll be doing Irish language modules in first and 2nd year. If you gotan honour in Leaving Cert Irish you go into the higher Irish class and if you didn't you go into the lower Irish class. In 3rd year, you're given the option to drop Irish altogether and take up other modules such as early Irish law.

    Hope this helps.

Im in 3rd year too, I concur with ICanMakeSound, though if you dont do honours Irish in the LC you have to get at least a C3 in another language other than english to do the course.

I'm in 4th year. I'm not sure what you're talking about- we had no choice. If it's a choice between beginners Irish and being merged with the modern Irish course i'd choose beginners- unless you're totally fluent. I stuck it out for 2 years and found it very very difficult and I was really good at Irish in school! If you mean irish taught through english that must be beginners Irish- I'm not sure what that involves, I heard years ago it was supposed to gear itself towards being junior cert standard by the end. Also yes you will have the option of dropping Irish entirely in 3rd year- though I didn't! Ended up doing early irish which was even more difficult- wouldn't advise unless you're very quick at picking up languages.
