American student coming to NUIG for Spring

I'm helping my daughter plan her study abroad at NUIG next semester and am looking for advice on finding a good place to stay as close to campus as possible with safe people in a safe area. I've looked at all the places recommended by the accomodations office, but I think she would enjoy the experience more sharing an room (ideally en suite) with other female student in a private home. Do these sort of things open up as students decide not to return for next semester? If so, when would those listings start appearing in the Advertiser?

I can't say I know of any specific place but this website may help: www.collegecribs.ie

Why not try Gort Na Coiribe? It's student accomodation but I'm pretty sure they'll have twin rooms and a lot of Americans stay there so they'll probably have space opening up once the visiting students leave.

I'd imagine it'll be hard finding a private house in January for only a few months.

Definitely the Advertiser is the place to check out.
You could always place an ad in the Accommodation Wanted section and see what kind of replies you get. Preferred locations would be Newcastle, City Centre, Shantalla and Rahoon.

    Good luck.

I'd say go with Gort Na Coiribe, it seems to be where most of the American students stay when they're in Galway.
I'm even living with two American girls here and theyre sharing the twin room.

The houses are pretty nice and its in a very safe area.
It's a 15 minute walk from the campus and about 10 minutes from town.

Most accomodation in a private home (usually called "diggs") are for week days only. Irish students who stay in this type of accomdation typically go home for the weekend, so that may limit your options. I reckon that only 10-20% of Irish students share a room. Its not as common here as in the US.

The international students office offers a "home-stay". This is where visiting students (large number of Americans usually) stay with a family at the weekend - this allows them to experience live in a typical Irish home, and to experience more of the Irish culture. The home they are staying in is usually a short drive away with all transport provided by the college. (not sure how the costs, if any are handled). this is in addition to your main accommodation.

I would recommend staying in either cuirt na coiribe or gort na coiribe, as both these student villages have proper management companies who will help sort out any problems. The residential areas near the college are mostly student occupied or young professionals. I can't think of anywhere within short walking distance that would allow students to live in a private home 7 days a week. I would recommend staying in a student area, as there will be other students walking too and from campus. If you are in a quieter residential area, there are less people around so its less safe. I've lived in galway for 6 years (all near the campus) and I have to say its very safe.

I spent time visiting US universities, and I know its more common to stay with a family over there, but you don't see that kind of accommodation here that much.

Agreed with this. Cúirt and Gort Na Coiribe are probably the best options. They're good quality accomodation, close to the college and with a student populace (noting that part of Gort Na Coiribe - i.e. the newest bit - is privately owned). Another one to look at is the Menlo Park Apartments. They're a little further away (only about an extra 5 minute walk), but are also student accommodation of a good standard.

I would agree with the above post that gort na corrib and cuirt na corrib are both good options. They are clean and safe, very nice houses. They are both relatively close to collage although I am not sure how much the rent is. I am sure they will provide this information on their websites:)

Id reccomend Cuirt na Corribe aswell (if it isnt booked out!)

Just thought Id mention Centre point apartments as well, its fairly popular with American students but be warned its a good 20-30 minute walk to the college! http://www.centrepointgalway.com

http://www.daft.ie/ is one of the biggest property/rental search engines in Ireland, plenty of listings there. Click under sharing tab, then theres a college search option to find rooms for rent near NUIG. There are plenty of students living in Dun na Corribe(I know...another "na Corribe" to confuse you), its a private estate just beside Cuirt and Gort na Corribe and just over the bridge from NUIG. http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=53.283113,-9.05282&spn=0.002919,0.014656&t=h&z=17&layer=c&cbll=53.283177,-9.052986&panoid=pyioWIo2jPiHJn_sz4eGxQ&cbp=12,314.98,,0,5.99
