If you log in or post during work hours, on a work computer, can the IT department find out your username?
And therefore find out what you post?

Well I'm not even allowed to be on the internet in work.

Sometimes I'm a little bit naughty.

They find out what you post and where you walk your dog.
Then they follow you and beep their horns at you...

I once worked with a guy in a multinational company, he had to ring IT in America for some assistance. When he gave them all the info about his computer, they proceeded to remotely access his computer.

Let me just say the result was absolute priceless on an epic scale. Phone line was pulled from the phone, followed by the frantic clicking of the delete button...... meanwhile the IT guy still had remote access and he rang the lads boss to tell him that he was waiting for a ring back. Poor lad was paranoid for ages after that fearing big brother was watching:p

So when I log out of boards & it says 'cookies cleared', boards are really lying to me aren't they?

And is there some kind of software I should look for that's installed on my computer to track my online footprints?

Anyone can back track your history from multiple places, from your ISP DNS Server, from the websites itself and moreover if they have a clamp on your IP they can even know what your are watching in real time.

Your IT dept can easily read your emails, log your web visits, and watch your file downloads. And since many computer hacks now involve tunneling through http it makes a great deal of sense for sys admins to closely watch network http traffic.

In other words, they know exactly what you're doing. Or can do at least.

What you might want to do is find out if your company has an acceptable use policy. Employers can monitor to their heart's content, but they have to inform you that they are doing so.

In theory they can, in practice they don't give a crap and generally only do if someone requests the information or they are nosy b*tards or its the type of organisation most people don't want to work in :P

A few things iv learned from work placement in IT:
-They can see everything - your email, your facebook status updates, your passwords etc...
-They dont care unless you piss them off - then they go through EVERYTHING you look at
-Management spend just as much time looking at crap than anyone else in the building.
-The blond girl at reception gets botox..

EDIT - ignore that last one :)

What I've learned working in IT: People will let me remote onto their machines with bank details, private conversations, pretty much anything on the screen for me to read if I wanted to. If I tell them something will take an hour to fix though, all of a sudden they don't trust me.

This, I was sat next to one of my supervisors once and she spent the entire day looking at wedding dresses, but when people were asking her for help she was telling them she was too busy to take a call
