Is it possible to register with the Law Society if you have a conviction?

Just a quick question, a friend of mine recently passed his Fe1's, however subsequently he recieved a minor criminal charge. Is it possible for one to practice and register with the Law Society, or is there a bar on solicitors with a previous conviction? Thanks in advance.

Well Paddy McEntee was fined for littering at the Katherine Nevin trials, so i'd imagine solicitors would be alright to do this and continue practising also.

maybe it was more serious than littering though.

It depends on several factors such as, nature of conviction, how long ago, etc. Given the nature of the job and the fact that unlike any other profession, solicitors actually hold client monies, any offences involving any element of dishonesty are a major impediment. Even minor theft, etc.

The conviction must be disclosed to Law Society. As far as I know the consent of the Education Committee must be obtained prior to entering Indentures of Apprenticeship.
