VRT budget rate - impossible?

    Hi All,

I am looking at a car that is for sale localy, but it is on foreign number plates. I tried to get the VRT rate for it, but the car is not listed on the Revenue VRT Calculator database (the car is 23 years old). I emailed and called (and visited) Revenue office, NCT Centre, VRT helpline, etc. All without any success. They simply say that to have the car registered I would need to book the VRT Inspection, bring the car to the NCT Centre, etc. The problem is that I am not going to buy the car until I know approximate VRT rate that will apply prior to the registration process. The car I am looking for is quite specific and its value purely depends on the condition. It may be worth, say 1k or 15k Euro. So the VRT may vary between €700 and €5,000 at worst case scenario (36% of the value).
What would you do in this case? Sure, I am not going to play with my budget and buy the thing for a small money and then face the unexpected. Is there any way of knowing the VRT rate before I buy the vehicle?

    Thank you for any suggestions.

How much is that car worht in real?
When you are buying particular model,. you know if it's worth 1k or 15k.

Besides - what kind of car is it?

From the VRT point of view, it doesn't matter how much the vehicle is worth in real life or how much you paid for it or what condition it is in. The only factor that matters (from Revenue perspective) is the OMSP, which is a mystery at this point. From what some people have experienced, the OMSP / VRT rate may be a nasty surprise...
BTW, the vehicle in question is a Mercedes-Benz 300GD.

Id say look on carzone/donedeal/autotrader and take the middle of the road price for ireland and the UK and youll pay the vrt on that

That would be fine if the prices you find are within +/- 50-100% between the lowest and the highest, but for this vehicle you will find all sort of asking prices.

    There is one for 3.5k:
    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Mercedes-Benz/G-Class/jeep/201043200002135/advert?channel=CARS

    Another one for 14.5k:
    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Mercedes-Benz/G-Class/G-Wagen/201041199879584/advert?channel=CARS

And there is another one (special edition, I know) for crazy money:
    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Mercedes-Benz/G-Class/G-Series/201040199746076/advert?channel=CARS

All in all it is a lottery and I do not want to play with my budget. The safest way is to simply walk away, but I would really like to know how much the registration tax would be for it...

If your location is Ireland is it not the seller that has to worry about getting it VRT'd before they sell it?

Well, he should get it done, but he parked the car and is not going to bother. He wants to sell it. That is all.

You'll have extreme problems registering a foreign reg car you bought here. They now look for sale invoices, etc.

He can't sell it to you either, at that.

    Why not?
What kind of problems would it be?
I assume the car is registered abroad on his name with his address abroad.

This is Ireland, its far more likely to be on UK plates and someone that never cleared it.

Why don't you commercialise it for now and pay the 60 euros to clear it and clear it in a few years as a vintage car and put the seat back in if you need them? Remember this is Ireland and if it can be f*cked up by bureaucracy and taxes it will be, but there's always a loophole to be found if you look hard enough.

Hmm... At this point I am more interested in how to get the budget VRT rate, rather than doing everything to register the car. The car would not be used as a goods vehicle, so it is not the way to go anyway.

Im thinking that the NCT guys wont concern themselves with the condition. They will pick a top price and charge based on that leaving you to appeal if it is unfair.

I'd bet the VRT would have an OMP of over 10k

I believe he bought it in UK, but never registered it here. Not sure why. Possibly the VRT was too much ?.

The guy is not entitled to sell a foreign registered car without the relevant traders permit.

Donedeal is stcked with UK reg cars for sale, all would involve potential big problems to re-register, if a seller wont pay the VRT and do the paperwork, Id walk away.

Go back to him and remind him that he's going to have this exact same hassle with EVERYONE who comes to look at his car, and that he'll find it far easier to sell his car if he gets a VRT quote done.

His laziness is costing him a sale. Tell him (nicely) to stop being such a baby and get off his arse.

If one is to commercialise a vehicle, doesn't it have to be done in a certain way that it can never be uncommercialised down the road for this very reason?

@OP - AFAIK, the government made it illegal for anyone in the republic to sell a car which is on foreign plates. All sellers, by law, must register the car and get it on Irish plates before selling.

Thank you for this info. I didn't know that. Did they introduce this recently? I never heard of this before...

I would say to tread carefully. If its been laid up then it also hasnt been MOT'd for a while either.
Get the chassis number perhaps and with that get a list of its options etc. Value it on parkers.co.uk
Submit it like that to the VRT people and ask for a quote.

If they wont quote, or it seems like it will be serious work, walk.

They brought this in in the last budget. The one that was made to scrape every last penny together.
