You actually brought it to the NCT with a "broken front headlight" and didnt fix that before going?

Is it any wonder my heart always skips a beat when I see a micra on the road......

Actually it makes sense to do as little as possible to a car (especially older ones) before the nct. What if you spend a fortune on new headlamps etc and it fails for something even more costly to replace!

CV boot can be a messy job (literally) to do on the driveway. It usually involves to removal of the driveshaft which mean the gearbox oil has to be drained. But the right mechanic should have the tool to stretch the boot over the cv joint and probably wouldn't be more than an hour or two for labour.

Cc joint on micra is seperate and doesn't need shaft to be removed.

This attitude is responsible for the test for older cars going to 1 year. Your car should be roadworthy at all times, not just when going for a retest.

Well obviously one should keep ones car in a road worthy condition. I was making the assumption the damage may have occurred just prior to the NCT taking place.

@ colm_mcm: How easy is it to separate the Joint from the shaft?

if you have to ask about the CV joint then get a mechanic to do it

you have a front wheel drive car, if dirt gets in and the joint fails all the engines power will get transferred to the other wheel, you might be in the ditch before you know what happened

    scrapyard for headlight replacement

indicator - does it make tick tock noises ? - try swapping the relay first

download the manual from www.nct.ie and check stuff before the test

Not true. If a joint fails the diff will send all the power to the now broken free spinning driveshaft in which case you'll come slowly to a halt. That is unless you've an LSD (unlikely on a micra) in which case some power will be sent to the other wheel.

If the driveshaft pops out of the broken joint then that could be problematic! Unlikely though as the joint would have to be rattling for a long time before that happens.
