Becoming a county councilor

How does one become a county councilor? The processes of becoming involved in politics are somewhat foggy, so I'm just wondering what steps would one take, are there other positions you should/must hold first? or does anyone know of where i could get more information?

Also, I should state that this is more of a curiosity thing rather than my career aspirations before someone tells me to reconsider my directions.

If you are independent you need 15 supporters who are registered to vote.

Thanks feelingstressed. I'm quite shocked to learn that the elections only take place every 5 years. I presume that means that one would have to wait that time if they wished to be a councilor and if they were elected they would be stuck in ireland with that position for 5 years?

I'm not sure how, but I presume one fixes the pothole outside the pub he/she owns and then rings the editor of the local paper to report it. You're in after that.

It appears the next election isn't until 2014. Plenty of time to design a few comical, but message delivering, election posters.
