VW Polo (2003 1.2L) conking in neutral

    Hey all,

Bought an 03 VW Polo from a dealer last Friday. Was serviced before I picked it up.

Noticed the engine is a tad noisy (and there's a gentle hum / vibration from under the car) when started.. also once or twice, the car has conked very easily.. it even conked when started and in neutral today.

Bit worried about it to be honest.

I have a warranty of course and am going down to get the radio replaced tomorrow (one in old car is a decent Sony, new Silvercrest one doesn't work very well.. dimly light and volume shoots up suddenly, and is unresponsive), motorised wing mirrors don't work (probably a fuse).

From a Google online, the idle air control valve is most likely to be the problem. Anyone else have any thoughts?

Wanna get it sorted while it's still in warranty.

Yep.. have my girlfriend start the car while I looked at the engine.

It vibrates noisily and then shudders to a halt, then cuts out.

She said the speedometer went nuts - shot up to 5,000 rpm then down to 1,000 rpm, and up again (she thinks) before conking.

Hi now this is only a wild guess, but could it maybe be the crank sensor? That only springs to mind cause I have a saab, and one of the symptoms of this on saabs anyway is an erratic or no working rev counter.I assume there is no management light on?

EDIT I assume you mean rev counter and not speedo.

It's possible alright.. am bringing it into the dealers this afternoon. It's their obligation to fix it. I just hope it's an easy fix, and not something I'll have to live with.
