I am looking to buy a decent second hand car (max 5 years old) for a weekly commute of 500km on motorway. Is diesel a good idea for this amount of driving?

I have no idea what to get, so any suggestions would be apprecitated. I know you prob have seen this query a thousand times! I'm looking to spend up to 7000-8000, cheaper would be good too!

    Thanks.

Diesel is the only way to go imo.

    Get yourself an Octavia!

Alternatively if you can take the tax hit, a 530d auto would be a lovely bus for the commute. May have to look a bit older than 5yrs old though

500km a week isn't a lot. Your budget would probably get you a focus or the equivalent, maybe an 05 or 06. Modern diesels can have costly failures like dual mass flywheels and diesel particle filters anywhere from 80-120k miles depending on type of use. With a used car you'll never know what type of use it has had. These problems could wipe out years of fuel savings versus a petrol.

A decent petrol would avoid such problems and if you chose carefully you can get one that will give decent motorway economy. A six speed box is a good bonus for high speed driving. Just something to bear in mind when making a decision anyway.
