Since we just got iTunes 10.1 I think we can safely say both of these are out for now :)

It's something to do with their cloud based service. iTunes live streaming or whatever. That massive data centre they built in North Carolina ain't for nothing.

Hopefully it'll be them announcing that they realised Ping is a waste or time and they're doing away with it.

Has to be the cloud and if it is then iTunes will just be the start of it.

What exactly does a cloud mean?

Are they going to sneak something into iOS 4.2 to work with some new iTunes feature? 4.2 is due isn't it?

No point having a super new cool piece of magic if no one can test drive it. I'd love to have my library in the cloud. But that is more likely if I store it in s3 than if apple implement something. Would be only your iTunes purchases no doubt.

There's a lot of speculation that it might just be the Beatles catalogue, which given the lack of press conference would kinda make sense. Live streaming/cloud-based iTunes might be too big to just announce on the website. Steve really likes the Beatles.

    Maybe a subscription service?

I'd be hugely disappointed if that's all it was!
If the Journal's report is true, the addition of the Beatles' music to iTunes could be a symbolic milestone for Apple, said Tim Bajarin, an analyst with the Silicon Valley-based technology firm Creative Strategies.

"Assuming that it is real, it is a very significant point in music's history given the fact that the Beatles have for the last 15 years, held back on digital rights," he said. "This gives Apple a rather interesting opportunity to bring the Beatles to a very large audience; to a direct digital audience."

Since the message hit the Web this morning, bloggers and analysts alike have been bubbling over with speculation about what Tuesday's announcement will bring.

My money's on the Beatles, which seems ridiculous, but seems to be being tipped all over the place.

    Tomorrow is just another day.
    That you'll never forget.

Looks like Apple have found the cure for Alzheimer's.

Read that too - if it is just the Beatles catalog, I'll most definitely forget about it in 0.5 seconds...

Can Apple really be blamed for the hype? I mean, they can't even take their store offline for maintenance without people thinking the next gen iPad is coming.

    I think this is immense.

Having spent years and millions at each others' throats over naming rights, logos, copyrights, IP, etc to see the music of the innovators of 60's / 70's popular music available via the multi-media innovators of the 21st century is brilliant. Apple vs Apple resolved.

I agree about the store going offline for maintenance and the media going into a hype frenzy is not Apple's fault but in this case, yes they can be blamed: they could have kept the page marketing at "an exciting announcement from iTunes tomorrow", but nope, they had to ramp it up to 11, with the BS about a "day you will never forget".

Guess what Apple? I've already forgotten this BS :).

    The Beatles.

    Seriously. Is that it?

And I was looking forward to a cloud based iTunes

I'm so excited I could fall asleep.

What prompted this? Is Heather Mills looking to renegotiate or something?

Can't imagine Prince ever doing this......

And its gonna be a tidy little earner for both parties. Their non digital album sales are still huge sellers. A band like U2 have sold over 100 million records, the Beatles over a billion. 50 million alone in the last 10 years. Both Macca and Jobs are gonna mint it for themselves and their respective companies.

EDIT the only problem I see is that any fans already had the CD's and just slapped them on their ipods anyway. So maybe they've missed the big money boat.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Apple Corps spent so many years bitching and fighting, they could have sold much more. Still, how much can Macca and Ringo spend?:pac:

Possibly. Another complication all along was that certain rights to the Beatles back-catalogue were buried (no pun intended) in the estate of the late Wacko Jacko. I suspect this was the EMI / Parlaphone collection that he bought out many moons ago when he was flush with cash. Given the alleged degree of his indebtedness, some of his bankers might have viewed this as a way of rescuing some of their cash - collateral-wise there didn't seem to be much outside of his own music.

    itunes was just updated.
    sl was just updated.
why would they suddenly throw in streaming now?

Anyway - I was lookin at the itunes lp with art and videos included along with every studio beatle track for 149 euro - very nice.

you people do know who the beatles are right - you cant over-hype the beatles

Liked the Beatles - hated John Lennon. Like U2. Hate Bono. The Stones were way better. What a let-down of an announcement. As someone else asked, what's this 'cloud'?

Nope. Because like I already said, they over-hyped it:

An "exciting" announcement would have been enough, it wasn't that big a deal after all. I don't mind Apple's whole hype machine and way of unveiling things most of the time, but this was a bit too much for too little.

Ah come on, J-bik. Hype implies they were doing a whole load of publicity about this. They weren't. There was a banner on the front page of their website for a day before the announcement. Okay, so the "another day you'll never forget" thing was a bit much, but we should be well used to this with Apple by now. Everything is "magical" or "amazing" or whatever. This is how Apple talks about everything - be it the next iPad or an Apple branded battery charger.

There is indeed an Apple hype machine, but Apple themselves have very little to do with it anymore. There is so much anticipation for Apple announcements that they don't have to to. They just send out a press release saying they are going to hold an event and the media and bloggers (and message board posters) take it from there.

I'm not 100% sure what 'cloud' will mean for itunes. But if I was to hazard a guess, it would mean that you could subscribe to a service on a yearly basis where you can stream any song that is on itunes straight onto your ipod touch/iphone/mac. Like the spotify service but bigger and available worldwide. Could apply to tv shows and movies on itunes too. So you could have an 8GB iphone and still have access Terabytes of music and listen to it live using your 3G or wifi connection. That's what I think it means anyway.

I can let it be. For me (and others here), it was a totally BS hyped up statement over nothing. For you and others, it was not. Both views can co-exist :). I don't see why people have to defend Apple in this case and try to justify it to those who think it was over the top. I just didn't care for it at all and think they overdid it, but that's just my opinion (which I'm sticking to).

I thought companies or people were allowed to advertise whatever they want on their own website?

If the media hypes it - thats not Apples fault.

Like I said nice little earner...

    http://www.apple.com/euro/itunes/charts/top10albums.html

Even though you would think the majority of Beatles fans would have the stuff already, these guys just keep on selling. Mad. Check out the amount of mop top album downloads already. Number one in quite a few countries and well represented in the top ten elsewhere.

Exceptional music will always sell well and good taste is never out of fashion, despite the Max Factor or whatever his name is with the funny trousers from Dagenham - he's from Dagenham, not his trousers.
