the mail/sun/people/mirror and all british imports are out straight away...they are even worse than ours..the indo and the times are passable but seem to have started to channel the spirit of the tabloids....am i asking to much for a newspaper that give quality news coverage?

Print media is dying fast due to the ease of access to the internet and free news. So they need to find new ways to attract readers. This results in a lot of newspapers going for sensationalism and what is more akin to gossip than news. So there are very few decent newspapers left. Personally, I avoid all of them.

Not to mention political party affiliation affecting subjectivity.

    what's wrong with the times?

I'm living in an Indo household but I've long since noticed a gradual lean towards tabloid reporting and extremely leading, biased articles. I've always kind-of seen the Times as being much better, but rarely get it. Please don't tell me that that's going the same way.

also, it's a bit of a myth saying newspapers are f'ucked - especially in this country. circulation of most papers have seen a small decrease but you'd have to expect that in a recession and with emigration the way it is. overall, newspaper sales are holding up strongly in ireland compared to many other countries...

the examiner is ok i guess...

Buying newspapers is ingrained in the habit of older Irish people, just like going to mass and voting FF. That, sadly, is what keeps the sales up.

I get the Times and haven't seen it move in this direction at all. Wish I could say the same about the Examiner but it's become ever more progressively tabloid like since it went national IMO. Still the second best paper though.

The Indo is awful these days IMO. Any newspaper that printed the pictures of the Pwc girls is the lowest form of gutter rag that I can think of. I hate when newspapers pretend to be outraged by something, but are actually engage in it themselves.
ie. 'Isn't it so sexist and degrading what these male employees have have done' and then they publish the girls photos themselves, far more sexist and degrading than the original email.
    Revolting.

I was hoping to do page 3 in that.

Ok I'm a 41 year old man, but that shouldn't disqualify me, going on what they put in.

reading a physical newspaper is one of lifes little pleasures that i am not willing to let go..from ink on the fingers to chewing the top of the pen while trying in vain the even start the cryptic crossword,to finding a year old paper in the boot of the car and skimming throught it just to see how different things have turned out..its so much better than online media.
i usually default to the indo but it has become more sensationalist to appeal to a wider audience....i guess it anything but a red top though....

Examiner here too.....used to read the Indo until I realised I could make up more credible and interesting stuff myself!

The Guardian is good, especially online - but they're kind of "hating on" Ireland at the moment, so perhaps not...

You should read better newspapers to keep up-to-date.

    - Used to be Cork
    - Expanded to be Munster (dropping the "Cork" in the title)
    - Now nationwide and far less Dublin-focussed than other so-called "nationals"

Don't buy newspapers but if I did it would only be the Irish Times. It's all online though so no need to buy it.

The Indo/Sindo are the worst of the worst. They try to cover the tat (X-Factor/Alison O'Riordan/burn the rich) they print with a veneer of respectability, at least the Red Tops have a touch of honesty to them.

Examiner seems to be second best. All the others are many moons away.

This is what I like about the Examiner, but the problem is that they just switch the focus to Cork rather than removing it entirely.

Have online subscriptions with the Times Ireland/England.

Don't buy newspapers very often now, if at all. I don't generally trust them and are full of sensationalism for profit and/or tabloid summed up items (I like detail) that usually is biased one way or another.

I get most of my news online now from various sources (including AH :D ) but if I'm going to buy a paper these days, I'll get the Sunday Business Post.

Without the guardian, the daily wailings, sindo, etc there would be a paucity of post on boards.ie. Have a look at the threads started recently (I'm paraphrasing here)
    • Eddie Jordan refuses to have 6 ft poppy stapled to his forehead - F1 supporters (Chas & Dave's fan-club) infuriated!
    • 3 or 4 Z-list birds claim to have changed religions - is this a record or the emergence of the burqa as a fashion-accessory?
    • Former UK drugs czar publishes report - we must change our laws!
    • boards.ie posters use accurate, meaningful and grammatically correct thread titles - daily wailings refuses to hire them!
    • Exclamation marks banned in boards.ie posts - after-market key-board sales plummet!!! (briefly)
(note: only the changes have been named to protect the incensed)

    Heh.

Forgot to mention The Bray People. Top quality newspaper, hardly ever any mistakes either.

Well there was that time they had a photograph with the caption "Insert Caption Here".

The Irish Times is the best we have IMO. The Indo is even worse than the Daily Mail, because deep down the DM really knows it's shyte.

    Irish Times really.

i'd read the Sun/NOTW etc. before the Indo/SIndo...

The Irish Times is the only quality newspaper in the country. Even that has been under threat of late by the Independent Newspapers culture brought in by Miriam Lord, such as this horrific article which appeared on the front page of The Irish Times in 2007, and she just a wet week in the place. Here's an extract:
"we pretend not to get excited about royalty from across the water. And certainly not in Easter Week, with a glorious parade commemorating the Rising ready to roll this Sunday. But Kate Middleton isn't queen yet, so that's alright. Although as Prince William's long-term girlfriend, she's as near to royalty as you can get."

The fact that Geraldine Kennedy, the current IT editor, allowed that tabloid trash to appear in The Irish Times doesn't bode well for the future of The Irish Times as the sole remaining quality newspaper in Ireland.

Eddie Holt's column in The Irish Times was thoughtful, insightful and always refreshing, but when Kennedy arrived as editor he was a victim of her purge. All to allow former writers of Independent Newspapers in to lower the tone. At least Myers has gone, appropriately enough to Independent Newspapers.

I'd love a serious Irish public affairs journal with experts from all walks of life contributing intelligent, progressive articles and investigations into societal issues. I'd be willing to subscribe €5 per week for my copy. At the moment I have to do with The Economist, Foreign Affairs or the like. We need a journal which focuses on Irish problems and issues, and looks at international (i.e. not just British precedents) best practice as a means to address them and inspire new thinking.

As if on cue, here's the latest daily wailings inspired thread on boards - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056090248&highlight=lidl
    • Paraphrased - Johnny Foreigner busts a caps in Rudolph's ass, Wealthy Chermans cash in on Tragedy
Note the use of a question mark at the end of a sentence which does not pose a question and the use of exclamation marks instead of full-stops. Missing are the "OMGs" "likes" and "totallys", in contravention of the boards/daily wailings/inter cert style guides.
