What exactly is this luck we are supposed to have?
Looking at some of the international coverage of our economic crisis in recent days I have heard it several time "is luck finally running out for the Irish"?
Maybe I am missing something but looking at Irish history I dont find a lot of luck involved

Sure they've been gone years. Some of us had to eat them to survive the famine.

Are we still the Island of Saints and Scholars? Are we still the "Emerald Isle?" None of these phrases mean anything. We were never any luckier than most.

That said, I would like to know where the phrase comes from. The other two are obvious enough.

I changed jobs about two years ago, and started doing a lot of travelling around Europe. Russia, Hungary, Romania, Poland, etc, etc. Usually I'd manage to wedge in a couple of hours to explore and learn a little about the locale. I think it was in the Uprising Museum in Warsaw when I swore that I was never again going to think that Irish history was any worse than anyone elses. (as per John Lennon's take on the luck of the Irish)

Its more the luck of the Irish abroad. For some reason any Irish I met abroad seemed to be very sucessful.

He was a bit melodramatic wasn't he..I don't wish I was English and the sound of Yoko Ono's voice on the song make my ears bleed.
