A rant about EazyTrip

A bit of a rant here. This morning I received a letter from Pierse & Fitzgibbon containing a fine for €143.50 for a toll violation in August. I was a little confused so I phoned them up and told them that I have an EazyPass toll tag in my car and gave them the details. They said that was fine and they would contact EazyPass and resolve it.

I then decided to check my statement, and it turns out that the registration on my account was incorrect. The year was wrong (06D XYZ instead of 05D XYZ). I checked a statement from when I originally signed up with eFlow and it had the correct registration. I phoned EazyPass and it turns out that a system error changed the registration back in March 2009 and this was the first time they were aware of it.

When I looked at an EazyPass statement for August, there were a whole heap of toll fees for the M50. The fees were €2.70 rather than the usual €2.00. I then checked on the merlin website to see what the 06 version of my registration was, and it turns out it is a commercial van. Then it dawned on me that for the past 20 months, I have been paying their tolls! I am not sure how much I have overpaid, but on the M50 alone in the last 2 months (I couldn't see any further back on the online statements) I think it was about €60. The only reason I spotted it was because of the different fee amount. If it had just been a car I probably wouldn't have noticed.

I phoned EazyPass and spoke to a woman there who informed me that they can usually claim back for the last three months, but she would check to see if they could go back any further. I wasn't getting any results, so I asked to speak to the person in charge. She told me that she wouldn't be able to transfer me because the supervisors don't take calls. Then she gave me the option of sending a letter of complaint if I wasn't happy.

The lady at EazyPass then tried to apportion the blame informing me that it is in the terms and conditions that I have to check my statement each month. I understand that I am partly responsible for not checking my statement, but I was out of the country for most of last year and my car was not being used!

They are the most infuriating bunch of useless twats to deal with - they seem to expect you to swallow the cost of their mistakes. They make it next to impossible to sort anything out over the phone, and refuse to believe any evidence you present. Someone of a more cynical disposition than me might think that their operatives are specially trained to give you the runaround in the hope you just give up.

Complain to the NRA as regulator of the etolling system, this often seems to be the only way around toll operators phone monkeys.

I'd send those clowns a bill for twice that for wasting your time as well.

I got a call back from the solicitor about the fine, and they told me that the fine would be waived, but I would have to make a manual payment for the 2 euro amount.

I then contacted Easy Trip and asked them what was going on. They informed me that my account had been credited by about 50 euro.

Today I had a look at my statements for the last 9 months and I found at least 60 mistaken tolls (60 * 2.70 = 162 Euro).

I have sent them an email and asked them to look again. They are definitely the most frustrating company I have dealt with in recent memory.
