Apologies if this question has been posed already but here it goes: if I'm to drop out of college before christmas and apply through CAO to get into St Angelas next year where do I stand regarding fees?? Does it mean that paying the registration fee for this year was a complete waste? :( HELP!!

why dont you stay in your course and apply for a transfer to another course/college ....then at the end of the year you will hopefully get accepted into second college and can start other/new course.

and your money is not wasted....better off to stay in college than try find a job at the moment - fingers crossed you qualified for a grant and that will come through.

I see where you are coming from, but I'm not at all happy with my course at the moment and apparently I'm not eiligible for a transfer because they are 2 different courses :/

have you passed the date to get your money refunded?

Reg fee doesn't get refunded, afaik, unless you're in receipt of the grant and had to pay because of delays.

What you're referring to are the two dates in the year where you can drop out and save paying some amount of fees for future courses. It depends entirely on the University though, some only have 1 date, and they're mostly all different dates.

okay, well there are delays with my grant so does that mean i can get a refund?

If you're in receipt of a grant, then yes, you're entitled to your registration fee back. Once you have proof that you are in receipt of a grant (letter from VEC/County council), drop over to the fees office and inform them. They'll issue a cheque at some stage.

You may not recieve a grant next year though if you drop out.

Thank you, I'll look into it. I also have a very genuine health reason for dropping out of this course, a reason which I cannot disclose here but it may help my case and hopefully I'd be eligible for a grant next year. Thanks for all your help

Is the other course in the same field? If not, you may not have to pay fees again (unless the rules have been changed since I was in college). For example, if you did a computer course this year, and next year you did a architecture course, I think you don't have to do pay fees, but if you did one programming course this year, and another computer related course next year, you may have to pay the full cost of the course. And yes, by full cost, I do mean having to pay for all the different subjects.

Check with your course head, as your health reason may get you out of doing so, though.

I'm hoping to drop out by Christmas though so I'm not even finishing the first year. Both courses are in the same field- I'm currently doing Primary teaching but I want to do Home Ec teaching...

Hrm. I'd check with your course head regarding the fees, esp with regards to your health problem.

Nah, if you do any degree (level 8) and drop out, then the govt. aint going to fork out for another one at the same year. Doesn't matter if they're related in subject choice or not.

Course heads usually know fup all regarding the matter. Talk to people in the SU (welfare officer/education officer) and student services. They'll do all they can to answer your questions / help you :)

Also, do it quickly, you want to find out the date to drop out by to avoid paying full fees for next year...
