I have to go for a retest this week due to one of the front lights not being aligned properly. I go this sorted by a mechanic and I was told that if the mechanic on the NCT does not have to raise the car onto the whatever you call it i.e just has to visually inspect the light to see if its fixed right that I won't have to pay the 28 euro retest fee for the retest. Is this true?

I assume headlight alignment needs equipment and is therefore subject to the retest fee. If so, that's a funny thing for a competent mechanic to say.

Checking the lights requires the use of equipment so you will have to pay the retest fee.

If you recall OP, it's one of the stations done first - emissions/lights.
They use a machine for it so have to bring car into the test hall.

Sorry to sound stupid but I presume once the car passed the other teste they dont need to test them again i.e I should be in and out.;)

Yes they will only retest whatever failed, in this case just the lights, should be only in and out but you will still need to pay the retest fee.
