I have a 07 diesel Honda accord estate and recently it has started popping out of reverse. If I reverse the car for about 3 seconds it pops out of gear into neutral. Anyone got any ideas?

    Sounds like trouble.

Is there enough fluid in the gearbox?

    +1 on the fluid level.

It could also be your gear stick linkage may need adjusting if its the non-cable type

I got this checked by the local honda dealers and they confirmed that the issue is in the gearbox and not the linkages. They also reckoned that to take out the gearbox and get it checked would be in the region of €1000 or more (this is the same garage that attempted to charge €300 for a service).

Is this the type of job that a private mechanic could/would take on or would it be a main-dealer type job only?

+1 on the gearbox specialist, main dealer wouldn't be as good for a gearbox issue, replace replace replace would be their game.

Has the dealer contacted Honda Ireland to see if there is any warranty or goodwill for the issue?

Very strange for a Honda, I believe they are usually fairly good for out of warranty claims but have no experience as they just generally don't go wrong.

Can I ask what was the gearbox and how much did it cost? Looking to get mine rebuilt soon

    Hyundai Tajet 2.0l CRDI manual.
Cannot for the life of remember what needed fixing, all I remember was that the car could not engage 1st,3rd or 5th,when I did engage second I could release the clutch pedal with no engagement whatsoever on the clutch, then BANG,10 seconds later it would just suddenly engage.

I was quoted over 2k for parts and labour but the guys in the link done it for me for 600 all in.
I was delighted until I found out that the car should of been recalled by Hyundai themselves.

They also done a clutch on my dads Suzuki Cultus for 190 all in.

I just brought the whole car, doubt they would have any problems with you just bringing the box as it cuts down on a lot of hassle for them.

I contacted Honda Ireland and they said to bring it in to the local dealer with the full service history (its an English import). All services bar the last one were done with Honda dealers and he got a bit pissy about this saying it would work against me, non-Honda parts blah blah blah. The local dealer needs to send the gearbox off to see if it it was caused by a fault or by driver error i.e. a driver putting it into reverse while travelling forward. It then may or may not be covered by Honda

My other option is the nearest gearbox specialist - €800.

It does seem like you are over a bit of a barrell. Take the chance that it is covered by warranty and you are laughing. If they decide it's driver error, then you are stuck paying main dealer prices for the work already done and at that stage, it would probably be cheaper to get them to finish the job.

    Tough call.............

A lot of uk accords the older shape up to 2003 can have a 5th gear syncro issue, grinding going into 5th and not being able to find reverse. I haven't heard of it popping out of reverse but it could be the same problem. Try changing the gearbox oil to amsoil mtf, it makes a massive difference in Honda boxes before you go spending big money. there is also a castrol one that's very good but I can't remember what it's called

Well for the sake of an extra 200euro I'd chance it...
