    Hey guys,

I have no idea where to go about this, So if its in the wrong place Im truely sorry mods :(

Ok, So I have a solid block (Its basically a brick) of Irish sterling that im guessing was supposed to be completely destroyed. I have it since the Euro came in and Ive had wrapped up and kept safe Thinking there might not be very many of these around then and even fewer later down the line.

Anyway, I was in Collins barracks not so long ago and seen on display what as basically a shabby and pathetic version of what I have, Like it wasnt even an eight of the full block so it got me thinking about mine again.

Mine is still in its Cellophane wrapper of which it was formed in and I have kept that in a bag, in a dark drawer for the last few years.

Do any of you guys know how common they are? Am I better off selling it or just keep it as a souvenir.

And if so, Who should I talk to further about it?

Hope im not wasting anyones time here.

Cheers guys, And sorry again if im in the wrong place!

I've seen a few of them at auctions, not much interest in them, 20 to 30 Euro.

    irish Sterling?
did Ireland not have the punt since the states foundation?

do you have some sort of Irish printed Sterling notes from pre independence days?

    what is "Irish Sterling"?

Not quite sure exactly what you have here, but if they are old banknotes they probably have quite a high value. At the very least, you could exchange them for the euro equivalent at the central bank.

They've been shredded in large quantities then packaged into brick shapes! He'd have some job finding a complete note and taping it all back together again!

Look, this could be a genuine question. Not everyone is aware of certain areas of collectibles and we encourage questions from all users as long as they are pertinent.

Please keep that in mind when replying to someone. Any personal abuse will not be tolerated on this forum. Thanks.

The Central Bank sold blocks of shredded pre Euro notes in 2002 - I don't recall how long they had them for, but I'm pretty certain they don't still sell them.

So this isn't one that escaped the furnace - it was officially liberated.

I don't know how many were sold - I recall two types being available - but can't recall the difference between them.

The Bank of England has been selling shredded notes in various forms (embedded in clear plastic etc) for a number of years.

On the sterling issue - Irish Currency Commission notes (Central Bank notes from 1943) were linked to sterling from their issue in 1928 until 1978 - the text saying payable in sterling in London (also in Irish) was removed in 1960.
