I had gas installed to replace an oil burning system and had the back boiler removed and I now have a gas fire. Can I remove gas fire and reinstall an open fire again. I do not want to heat radiators I just want to have open fire. Has anyone done this and any advice would be very much appreciated.

You need to decommission the gas line properly (get and RGII to do it).

hen you installed the gas fire was the chiney swept and cleaned or was a new flue linner installed.
If a flue liner was installed for the gas appliance this may not be suitable for a solid fuel fire and vice versa.....
If its just a standard open chimney then it should be ok.

no the chimney wasnt lined.is it really necessary to get a gas fitter in to decomission <surely i can just disconnect at valve on line feeding gas fire.

Assuming Ccmmon gas supply pipework for Boiler and Fire.:::
If it Natural Gas supply ( i.e Mains/meter supplied) any alterations to the system has to be carried and a Decleration of Conformance has to be raised. This can only be done by someone who is RGII.

This is to ensure the system is gas tight- Soundness Tested.

If you are on LPG Bottles then I would still recommend getting a RGII person to carryout works and get relevant paperwork.
