Web based genealogy applications

It's time for another of my occasional "what software do you use ?" postings again . . .

I got a new laptop the other day and am in the process of loading up all the software that I used on the old system, including genealogy software.

I was about to download and install Gramps which I still think is cool when I noticed a link to a web application called Genmod which looked even cooler. While looking at that I followed a link to PhpGedView which looks equally cool. They look like they could help me get the various cousins and relatives around the place to start cooperating and updating one common database, or at least give them the ability to check out what my version says about their side of the family.

I'm going to install them and see how they work, but I'm wondering if anyone here has used them before and has any comments or advice about them ? I know the basics about not publishing information on living people but is there anything else to be aware of ?

I have my own website and do a bit of content management for my sons mini-rugby club, so the technical publishing part shouldn't be a problem.

I've used PhpGedView and it's quite good - not bad to set up and you can import GEDCOM files from other sources if you already have your data built up. I ended up not using it as I doesn't didnt cope with sources the way I want to do it, so I'm currently managing my online pages manually - although working on my own full system ... long term project!

I hadn't heard of GenMod - must have a look

From a little bit of digging it looks like Genmod and PhpGedView are related. The structure and instructions look very similar and I think I came across something on the web indicating that Genmod was started when there was some sort of in-fight/split on the PhpGedView side of things.

It seems that the PhpGedView crew have split again according to this wikipedia article - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Webtrees.

I downloaded and installed Genmod yesterday - so far, so good. I will upload some bits and make it available to assorted family members and see what they say/spot/correct on my data.

    found this one recently : TNG8 - see : http://lythgoes.net/genealogy/software.php

It's not free like the other systems mentioned, there's charge of about $30 - but is looking very good..
