    You'll need to purchase it.

Otherwise, use a free office app like Open Office.

Microsoft don't sell old versions of their software, preferring instead to get the full price for the latest version. Also their downgrade rights vary a lot according to the product , version, whether you bought an OEM or retail or volume license and in the case of an upgrade version probably what you upgraded !

Try ebay - but trying to find a genuine copy will be difficult
you can't use OEM without the machine it was supplied with

Yes. And technically! But am i going to describe it to you? No. Do you know where i can get a car for free? Free beer? maybe a nice hat for nothing? I could steal them! Like the guys have said here, there are alternatives, such as open office. Open office is the closest free application to Word 2003 there is. It's actually quite fully featured and compatible with office.

There are of course other alternatives. http://office.live.com is free, provided by microsoft themselves, though this will only save files as .docx (a 2007+ format). Other options include google docs, zoho docs.. etc.

Might be easier to say why you want it. Then there might be alternatives.

That said I've 2003,2007 and 2010 on my machine at work, and 2003, is much faster than the later versions.

2007 & 2010 aren't free alternatives to 2003! but ya, most older software, with less requirements, will work faster! 2010 is just so much nicer to use in my opinion. :)

woolymammoth - not sure what you are talking about! Anyway the reason I asked for free is because as its 2003, an old version, I thought it might be availbale for free. I dont need it but I know a young girl that has started college and she has 2007 on her laptop but they use 2003 in the college and she wants the same verison as the college for some reason!

If it's a matter of exchanging files with fellow students who are on Word 2003 or that she has to submit her projects in Word 2003 format then that is not a problem, just tell her to click on 'Save As..' and in the 'Save as type' window select 'Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc)'.

It's actually best to change the settings in office 2007 / 2010 to always save in the old .doc format rather than the .docx format. Otherwise the only people who won't be able to open the files are other people using older versions of office as the free version of openoffice can of course open .docx documents

yes there are updates that allow older versions of word to read .docx but by the time you'd have downloaded all the security patches and service packs to make it safe to use you'd have installed openoffice anyway

and if using openoffice you can get it to save in .doc format by default too

Out of curiousity, how did you get all 3 on your machine? I thought that causes issues or is there a simple work around to that?

Office prompts you when it installs. Upgrade or keep the existing version.

Have to be careful with outlook though as not all versions might be supported by where you work. Some addon's etc. Its useful because VBA often doesn't work the same across versions, and also if you're talking someone through something, its handy to have the same dialog's in front of you. Also bugs in documents can be specific to a version. Thats across all the applications not just word.

The only thing to watch out for with open office is that you don't do some crazy formatting or use some feature that Word doesn't support. I've not used OpenOffice it much, so can't say I've had any experience of it.

Sorry guys, quick question, i've saved all my docs as microsoft 2007 version, my computer was wiped completely and lost mircrosoft. If I get 2010, will my docs still open?

Thanks for the quick reply, very relieved. When I open documents on my usb, there is just a blank page symbol next to it, will have to get it tomorrow-I presume I can get it in any computer shop?

the blank page icon is there because office hasn't been installed and so hasn't associated icon files with its file types yet. you should be able to get it in any computer shop, even tesco will probably have it!
