Im trying to decide whether to upgrade to iphone 4 from 3g(painfully slow since updating and missing a load of new features) or to get an ipad. The ipad is obviously the less immediately useful one but it actually could be pretty handy for me.

The problem is it seems like Apple will be updating them sometime soon as is their nature.

What do you all think? Should i get the ipad cause it fills a niche and just stick with the phone i have which works alright or just upgrade the one i get a lot of use out of?

Secondly which would suffer more from an update, i.e which of them would have more drastic changes do you think?

It all depends on your use, I guess. I got an ipad, and then recently went from 3G to 4 iphone. If i had to either go back to the 3G or give up the ipad, I'd go back to the 3G. I love my ipad, great for watching video while on the treadmill, reading books, browsing the interwebs... I love the iphone 4 too, but realistically, there's not much more that it does. I mean, the speed and camera are waaay better, but I was ticking along ok on the old one all the same.

I would say hold off on the iPad till the next gen when they will have facetime included, in the mean time iPhone 4 will make you very happy.

I went from a 3G to a 4. The difference is enormous, you won't regret it.

my personal view (as stated by kjl above) is not to get the ipad in its current version and wait for version 2.

Looking at getting an iPad aswell for Christmas. Wouldnt use Facetime, just wondering if anyone has heard anything else on what might be included?? (i.e. Retina Display on iPad)

P.S. Sorry dont mean to hijack thread

Not at all buddy, im curious about this myself.

Thanks for the responses here everyone, exactly what i was looking for.

So basically the consensus is the jump with the ipad from 1 to 2 will be annoyingly more substantial then the jump from iphone 4 to 5?

In that case, while Quackles makes an excellent case in that im also ticking away with the 3g, it would seem that the iPad may be a silly purchase at such a late stage in this generation.

Im willing to listen to arguments against that though because i love the ipads as well :D

Like Quackles, I had a 3G for almost two years, bought an iPad at UK launch and recently upgraded to an iPhone 4. If I had to give up one of the two devices, it would be the iPhone 4 but on the other hand, I would simply not buy an iPad now because we are too close to the 2nd generation been revealed.

My guess is that the iPad 2 will be a fairly hefty upgrade but the iPhone 5 won't deviate much from the 4 (I expect it to the like the 3GS was to the 3G). Only a guess though and I could be way off the mark...

I would hazard a guess that the iPhone 5 will probable have a 3d display, storage upgrade and maybe something else,

where as the ipad 1 to ipad 2 will definitely get a new processor, HD screen, front facing cam (facetime) and probably a storage boost.

Current iPad is fun and all, but I remember what the 3g was like, painfully slow. For example when I used to open my IM client it took 30 seconds before I got the message, verses about 5 seconds now. Its up to you, but you wont regret the 4. and you can start saving now for the new iPad.

Its been out here all of 3 months. I really don't get where people reckon there will be a new one in January/Feb. They have only just ramped up production enough to feed the demand, and that was before some of the big American chains came on line to sell such as AT&T, Verizon, best Buy, Target etc. I can't see them agreeing to sell 1st Gen iPads if there was a sniff of 2nd gen coming soon. Personally I'm waiting until they release the next one, but I don't expect that until June. It doubt it will have a retina display either.

I'm kinda with you on this, but then with my luck, having just bought one you never know.

To the OP, I look after my iPhone 3GS, the missus' 3G, and our iPad current gen. We're both planning to upgrade to iPhone 4 at the end of our contract, but I have to say, having used the 4 and being familiar with how basic and slow the bog standard 3G is (the slow speed of the wife's one WRECKS my head, even compared to my 3GS) you would be hard pushed to beat the change you'll see if you upgrade your phone.

iPad is what it is, and it's grand for the most part. The main things wrong with it, proper multitasking and multi user support, aren't likely to be sorted out by the next version anyways, so it makes no real odds whether you buy it now or later, but iphone 4 is GREAT and a big leap forward from the 3g in particular. If you can get a much better phone experience now, and a slightly better iPad next year, that's what I'd do.

My FIL has an ipad and tbh its not great at all, very limited compared to the iphone 4 feature wise and if you ask me its not worth what he paid!

With a huge amount of help from this thread it has been decided. I will be getting the...

    iPhone 4!

I was using my phone last night and realised compared to my brother's 4 its crazy slow. Add onto that the fact that i use my phone a huge amount for many different things its the wisest purchase. I can then buy the ipad at a later stage.

Cheers for the help everyone, good info and advice. As a token of my gratitude everyones getting a thanks :D

Good choice. Difference between 3G and 4 is epic. As you say, iPad can come later.

    Enjoy the iPhone 4 whiterebel!

I will prob go ahead with getting the iPad as no idea what else to get for Christmas. Was just wondering would it be better to go with a 16g one and just sync it regularly or go with the heavy duty bigger model and keep everything on it at once? I use my iphone for music so wouldnt be looking to put a lot on the ipad music wise.

    Thanks

I'd probably do the same if I was buying now with talk of new ipads coming ;) And the difference is amazing, you won't be disappointed!

Wait for iPad 2 (I plan on getting one myself) and get iPhone 4. It's awesome. I got mine at the UK release and it's the best electronic device I've ever owned. I too was on iPhone 3G before the difference is astounding!

    [EDIT]
So I skipped a few posts and see you already decided :o
