I've been either working or in college pretty much constantly since I was 18, longest period out of work was two and a half months. I'm 26 now.

    Define "unemployed".

I took a career break and didn't work for five months in 2007 - mainly was travelling overseas.

Got a fixed-term contract after that, but the recession kicked in at just the wrong moment and it's two years since I had an IT professional job.

Had no work at all for the first six months of that.

Then started getting days or sometimes weeks temping doing things like market-reseach, reception ... so was under-employed, rather than unemployed.

And at the same time I started teaching myself to implement websites, and doing some. They're only just starting to generate a very small tiny bit of income, but you could call me self-employed for the last 15-ish months too.

    I'm 42. Before 2007, I'd always had a job of some sort ever since I was 16.

Yea like theres unemployed and just not working at your profession then theres in college.. If your just concerned with the live register then maybe 6 months and thats because I had to be on it that long to get the back to education so that kinda doesn't count .. Bout 3 - 4 months I usually have some plan or looking into world wide options which has me in some mad spot atm earning decent cash .. But I would suggest on planning an exit if it goes past a month and pulling out of it if you find anything

Currently unemployed for about 2 years. Did the WPP program for 9 months, but now back unemployed.

    BTW, I'm 30.

Finished university 14 months ago. Haven't gotten anything yet. I do work in a small shop a few hours a week, stocking the shelves and the like, meaning I'm not drawing any social welfare but I consider myself 'out of work' in a way. :(
