Planning on spending a while in Burma soon but wondering how many weeks would be good for it.. The longer I spend there, the less I spend elsewhere.

    Any advice?

    Hi OP,

I spent about 3 weeks there last year. It was absolutely fantastic. Did all the tourist highlights. I'm not sure what you have in mind but we rented a taxi for some of our time there and he drove us around, helped with translating, etc which helped greatly and made it a lot faster to get around. I'm not sure if travelling on buses is practical for a tourist.

Something to keep in mind is the time it takes to travel between places - even by car. Some roads are just dirt tracks and tarmac is very rare apart from around the new capital.

Vietnam, Laos, Thailand are "same same" but Burma is a different level. It's not somewhere to rush through and is worth sacraficing a few days elsewhere to do it right.

I think I'd be taking the buses... Love getting in the middle of situations where you're the only farang. Basically I've to decide between either 3 or 4 weeks and I think you're right about not rushing it..

Have you been reading the news about burma recently? Aung San Suu Kyi released which is pretty interestin...
