Mine is a 99 LWB, 18mpg. It does some serious work though.

Which engine the 3.0td or the 4.2td?
I get around 500miles per tank from my 1997 swb on general duty, towing a lot less and motorway work probably low 20s as well.
Keep it under 50mph and you will get the best out of it.

We get between 25 and 30mpg in our 97 LWB Auto.

How big is the tank i.e. what mpg are you getting?

The tank holds 80 litres which is about 17.5 gallons so that means I'm getting 27.5 miles to the gallon which isn't too bad I suppose.

Defender only gets about 30 to the gallon on economy mode, so 27mpg for the land cruiser isnt too bad

Maybe I should have mentioned that there was a return journey from Galway to Dublin in that total, where the rev counter was almost reading 3000 revs for most of it,which as you say does not help fuel consumption at all.
I might try a tank at the speed you say and see what the difference is.

That sounds normal to be honest.

    They are heavy enough vehicles.

I am sure that your motorway mileage in 6th gear would be over the 30 mark if you keep speeds to 110 kph or so.
