I feel like the HSE has failed me (join the queue, you say). I don't know what to do. Basically I've lost my mind. I went to a GP a couple of months ago - yes months - basically saying I was a danger to myself and I need help now. I was referred to a public mental health clinic because I'm poor and can't afford €350 consultation fees. It took a few weeks to even get an appointment. A few more appointments and the consultant psychiatrist tells me that there is absolutely nothing wrong with me and no reason for me to be there. He tells me I should organise counselling for myself.
But I feel like I am constantly at immediate risk. Every single morning I wake up astounded and disappointed that I survived the night. The pain has been literally unbearable for months! Why is nobody helping me? It's incredibly difficult to ask for help when you feel like this, let alone to have to beg again and again at various appointments and various doctors only to be eventually informed that it's all in your head?!
What should I do? What can I do?!

If you spoke to a physician (or multiple ones) and they all informed you that there is nothing wrong with you, your pain may be psychosomatic in which case I suggest you do find a psychiatrist of some kind-- but if it's only one doctor then go to another for a second opinion straight away.

Well I spoke to three doctors and a psychiatric nurse but they were all just sort of gathering information, they gave the information to the consultant psychiatrist who saw me last week and said that. But how/where can I get a second opinion? Going private isn't an option and I'd say with public it's just a case of beggars can't be choosers, you take what you get.

If you genuinely feel you are an immediate danger to yourself, go to your local hospital. Tell a doctor there how you're feeling. As far as I'm aware (from working in a hospital, but not in psychiatry), they legally have to either give you a bed or find one for you elsewhere.

I'm not trying to give medical advice. Just passing on information as best I can. If someone who knows better than I do could either correct me or elaborate, that'd be great.

There is a suicide prevention centre in Lucan in Dublin called Pieta House. They have a reputation for being very compassionate and helpful. I don't know what the situation is with free care but there is no harm in calling them. http://www.pieta.ie/

There is also a family counselling centre in Lucan and I know that they offer care on a sliding scale; they are known for seeing patients for as low as €15 or €20 a session. Their number is 01 621 7022

If Lucan is miles away from you, at least speak to these people so that they can recommend somewhere where you can go that is near to your home.

Don't give up until you get some help, your life is absolutely worth it. You have to be your own best friend here.
