    Hi Coltay.

I hope this is not in breach of the terms of the forum (after all, the poster asked for information). However if it is, mods please delete my post. Note that I have today contacted boards.ie to discuss having my username converted to some kind of "official" capacity per Wibbs' previous suggestion.

In the interests of full disclosure I should mention that I'm affiliated with Calcul, the distributor of Citizen watches in Ireland. I can recommend a couple of Citizen watches that I think fit your bill, but cannot comment on other brands.

Before I get to the recommendations, I see from your search that you were looking at watches on Amazon UK. This may be just for convenience, however please note that I would encourage you to buy from an Irish jeweller for the following reasons:
    • Irish RRPs for the Citizen range of watches are in line with or better than the comparable UK RRP, when you adjust for the VAT difference (21% vs 17.5%) and convert at today's rate of 0.85p to the Euro.
    • Citizen watches bought in Ireland (and the UK) have an extended 5-year warranty, as opposed to the standard 1-year international warranty from Citizen.
    • Citizen watches bought from an Irish jeweller are packed in an exclusive wooden jewellery box which is not available from overseas-based sellers.
I've recommended a few watches in the price brackets you mentioned below.

    UNDER €400:
For under €400, there is the new World Perpetual AT which features in TV ads between now and Christmas. There are a few variations on this watch which can be seen here - (just search for "CB" and you will find them all).

I'll point you towards two in particular which are my own favourites:
    • Steel colour, bracelet, black dial: model CB0020-50E @ €340
    • Brown leather strap, rose gold plating, white dial: model CB0013-04A @ €320
Of the above, the strap version is a bit more "classic" looking as opposed to the sportier bracelet model. Personally I like the strap version.

Both of these watches are Eco-Drive so they are fuelled by light and have a power reserve so that they will keep running even in the dark.

The key feature though is that they are radio-controlled - they sync automatically with a radio signal from the atomic clock in Germany every night so you don't have to set or adjust the time and you can always rely on accuracy. (The German time signal is picked up in Ireland, we've been selling r/c watches in this country for many years. If you are travelling, they can also sync to the atomic clocks in the USA, China and Japan.)

Both watches feature a sapphire lens.

Both watches are perpetual calendars. Case diameter is 42.6mm. Unfortunately they do not have the day/date function you requested - they are "date only". We do not have any day/date perpetual calendars under €400.

    AROUND €1000
Citizen's Signature Collection is available from a small number of Signature Authorised Dealers in Ireland. The range and list of dealers can be viewed at www.citizen-signature.com.

The Signature Grand Complication is the one which I think ticks all the boxes in terms of what you are looking for - day/date, perpetual calendar, Eco-Drive with power reserve. It also features a chronograph and minute repeater functions.

For €1,015 you can get the brown crocodile strap version in two-tone with rose gold and black dial - BZ0006-02E. (go to the above Signature link and click on "Collections" then "Grand Complication").

Bracelet versions range in price from €995 (all steel) to €1275 (titanium).

The Signature Collection features all sapphire lenses, crocodile leather on strap models, hand-assembled movements and a higher grade of fit and finish. We believe that the finish on these watches is comparable to other brands which are priced much higher. For example, the proprietary coating on the sapphire lens allows 98% of light to pass through, rendering the lens as close to invisible as you will find on any watch in my opinion.

You also mentioned that moon phase is an option you would consider - there is a brand new Signature Moon Phase Flyback in the same price brackets as the above. Unfortunately though it doesn't include "day" function or perpetual calendar.
    ---

As mentioned at the top of the post, I am hardly an impartial judge but I'd encourage you to look up the above mentioned watches online - there is plenty of discussion of the Signature Collection and the new World Perpetual AT on various watch blogs and forums. I think you will find favourable reviews.

If you'd like me to recommend a jeweller near you where you can view these watches, please send me a PM and I'd be happy to do so.

Hope this is helpful - sorry it's a bit longwinded!

Cool by me T and fair play for contacting the office on that score. :)

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Hi Coltay. No problem - glad to help.

Unfortunately the Campanola collection is not available in Ireland - in fact I don't think it's available anywhere outside the US and Canada, but don't quote me on that. It is certainly not in the UK or continental Europe.

Campanola are lovely watches, with very intricate dials. To the best of my knowledge they are priced a step higher than the Signature Collection but I don't have any specific pricing information as they are outside of our product range.

John Lowney has a great selection of Signature watches and I know that he will have a few variations of the Grand Complication. As you say he's the closest AD to Cork city so I'd recommend that you go to see him in Clonakilty. I'll reply to your PM with more on that.
