I believe you may be trying to compare apples and oranges.

Within the iTunes application if you click on the "Music" icon under "Library" the bottom window-bar displays something like "4,567 items, 936.7 hours, 283.24 GB". If you click on Podcasts, Movies, TV Shows, Books, etc you will get similar information displayed for each kind of iTunes Library content.

Disk Inventory X on the other hand shows directory-tree views in one pane and alternatively views by by file-type in a subsidiary pane.

Unless you choose to spend time to customise finder views or build customised Spotlight finds / views IMHO I can't see how you will reconcile the irreconcilable.

the thing is, my itunes is only for music, there are no podcasts etc, so why is my music folder in finder 98gb, but my itunes library over 49? would i be mad to go through the long boring task of going through each folder in my music library to make sure its all in order?

Seeing as it's double the size, maybe all your music is doubled up? Why don't you have a search on your hard drive for a couple of song names and see where they exist, then compare the locations to the location of the actual music in iTunes?

or just go into itunes, preferences, then advanced and se if "copy songs to itunes" is checked

@Gordon that's possible if OP has opted to have iTunes import all the "music" files on the drive into its libraries and also left the originals in situ in another directory.

OP did you install / are you using GarageBand? AFAIK exercises, lessons and your own compositions are stored in this folder as well by default as well as album art, play-lists, indices, old iTunes libraries, etc.

they are copied to library as the post bove yours, that box is ticked, does that mean i can delete my music from its folders and it will remain in the itunes library?

Confirm that the files exist in both locations first. With that box ticked, anything you import to iTunes should get copied to the iTunes music folder. Where else were you storing music?

Just under music, n the home folder. did having that box ticked make it so it would be in that folder but also inside the itunes folder? i deleted it there, then remembered im waiting to get my replacement iphone, so restored it from time machine so not to lose ny backups! so once i get that back, i'll delete the itunes folder and see how it is then! but there are duplicates inside the itunes folder!

    Yes.

    Yes

It would have helped if you'd mentioned this earlier in the thread.

I suggest that in the interests of simplicity / continuity / clarity you delete everything except the iTunes folder (I'm hoping there is only one iTunes folder)

To eliminate duplicates from your iTunes library, click "Music" under "Library", then select File/Display Duplicates, then select and delete the duplicates, selecting the option to move files to the trash.

only did it long after the thread was started, as i realised my backup would have gone when i deleted the folder!
not everything from my music folder is in the itunes library though somehow. so when i get my replacement iphone, im gonna restore the backup, then delete the itunes library, if im right in thinking after i re-import everything into it it should rebuild the library itself?
(yes, I just confused myself a little)
