I am considering getting my sister to buy a guitar in Miami and ship it over.

Anyone any ideas about couriers-How much??-Who is good.??

Just interested in the shipping aspect-I know about vat and duty and how it may be better to buy local.

Usually rate is around $140 from USA, but it may vary from courier to courier and wether you have full insurance.

USPS have been the best for me. Fedex are reasonable, UPS are expensive, so i would avoid them. Both Fedex and UPS do the paperwork for the Irish Customs for you. They are all above board with the tax aspect.;)

I've no idea about couriers but I can recommend this shop about 30 minutes outside of Miami http://www.mae-music.com/ I've bought from them before and they're a good bunch so you'll get a quality instrument that's set up correctly if they have what you're looking for.

In my experience USPS has always been very reliable. Depending on who sends it for you the price normally works out around $120, in my experience at least. Regarding tax, I believe they calculate the amount due using the declared value for insurance. So obviously any dodgy business there comes with its own risks.

Just make sure you do all your sums before buying. I know someone who tried something similar. Ordered a USA Tele in NY through a friend, got the friend to send it by USPS and mark it as a gift. He still got taxed when it arrived into Ireland and ended up paying Irish prices for the thing. It just may not be worth the hassle.

Thanks for replies. Found a suitable instrument closer to home anyway so its moot now.
