I get my tv from either 3rock or Kippure , I'm in Lusk.

Got a dtv box, but my grid aerial in the attic breaks up during bad weather so I'm gonna get a new uhf aerial.

As far as I can make out I need a C/D aerial and I can point it at either of the mountains transmitting as they're on the same freq??

Are there brands of decent aerials for the chimneytop? and decent places to buy a aerial?

    /ot
Also my neighbour has a sky dish, I was gonna ask him about geting a quad lnb and taking one of the feeds and giving him a third feed for a spare sat box he could get.
Are there any gotcha's doing this?

You could just try the grid aerial outside. Assume if it's been in the attic it would be in good shape & these are a wideband design which work fairly consistently across all the UHF channels.

There's hardly room for 2 satellite dishes and a grid aerial on the chimney, if the neighbour doesn't agree to the dish sharing.
The less times I need to get a ladder the better.

You don't have to put the aerial on the chimney you know.
A gable end or wall will do facing the three rock/kippure direction.
Even on the chimney all you need is 2 inches of spare space to bolt on your very tiny thin pole.

You lose a lot of signal strength by being inside-20db's or more.

I'm suprised there are issues, I have a grid aerial pointing through a cavity block wall towards Three Rock and I get quite strong DTT on Ch. 54. And this is in Co. Louth. Would it help to move the aerial in the attic to find a more optimal position?

Secondly, if you got a small Contract C/D aerial, it would take up very little space alongside a dish but will give a clear increase in signal.

Thirdly, Three Rock I believe is not at full power and will have a fairly significant boost in signal over the next 2 years. Any breakup will cease by that stage, if you did want to hold out and not go to further expense and trouble.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned it, but I think there could be problems sharing a common piece of electrical equipment (LNB) with another household which might possibly be on a different phase to your own home.

Maybe someone more qualified than me would be able to comment?

And I'd agree with earlier suggestions to put the aerial outside, not neccessarily on the chimney.

Just try it someday when the weather is fine - see how much the signal improves outside - even mount it on your ladder temporarily if you can.

This is often brought up. The argument is that if the equipment in both properties developed similar faults there could be 440v between them. Unlikely in practice and easily solved by making sure the dish and LNB cables are earthed.

My semiD has the neightbour's house almost exactly between us and the transmitters, so I've a jack wall and a gable wall in the way...

I've seen a C/D aerial on an irish tv supplier website for about a tenner, my original post was kind of asking if this is worth buying or if a decent aerial would cost a bit more?

re. the lnb power supply, is the power not some tens of V dc? like 19 or 24V?

You already have a decent aerial. Just relocate it.
