    Hi All,

i only joined boards.ie tonight for the first time on the recommendation of a friend. I am recovering from a life threatening illness.I 'seem' to be out of the woods?hopefully. My doctors have advised me to take rest in a sunny location for a 4week period.I'm thinking of the canary islands.I have never been to ANY of the islands.I am looking for a quiet(ish) spot, accomodation with air con for only myself,37 yr old male, and a gym to 'try' recover before i begin work again in Jan ( with the help of God ).I'm not loaded with $ by any means but can afford maybe 2 to 3 k euro for the 4 to 5 week stay.Any help, guidance, suggestions or insights would be be SO appreciated folks.Im not even sure how ive posted this is correct,so if im doing so in error or not in the best manner, please advise.
Thank you all for your kindness in advance
    Roger

Good to hear you are feeling better :)

I've been to Puerto Rico (Gran Canaria) a few times, it's quietish. But plenty of restaurants and shops and a nice enough beach. Not sure about a gym.

There is a new nice beach that you can walk to I'm guessing a mile or two quite hilly walk, nice walkway.

You can always get local bus or taxi to other places around the island if you get bored..

There always seemed to be day trips for shopping, activities if you wanted to get involved.

google Puerto Rico and have a look for yourself.

The only pain is when you get to airport, bus transfer is about two hours I think.

I've never stayed anywhere with air con, but it never bothered me.

If you are not tied to exact dates check late availability and be prepared to haggle for a good price. As far as I know this time of year is their peak time.

Hope all stays well for you and you enjoy your hols :)

Moved to Travel as I think you'll get better ideas from there than LTI.

Congrats on feeling better! If you want to stick with canaries lanzarote is one option too, fairly quiet little island, yet things to see, I'd say perhaps the quietest of all the canary islands? Small island too, airport transfer could be easily done by just getting a taxi? :)

Will you be cooking your own meals? Going for self-catering is one option, might save you few bobs for a longer stay like you're planning? Might be too much hassle tho if you want to concentrate on getting better? Plus you can get good value deals on restaurants as well, might be worth it?

Madeira is one brilliant option, gorgeous nature and very relaxed pace of life alltogether! :) You might like that too? Basic infrastructure is pretty good there, plenty of services for tourist, surely gyms too? My parents absolutely love it there, been going there for years!

Hope this helps a little, enjoy your hols and take care!

Get travel insurance. Unfortunately, only VHI travel insurance covers you for pre-existing conditions and in order to get VHI travel insurance you need to have a VHI health policy.

Give an idea of the post subject in its title. More people will read it and so you are more likely to get an answer to your question.

I've just got back from a week in Costa Teguise in Lanzarote. I would say that sounds perfect for what you are looking for. It is pretty quiet but has a lot of bars and restaurants, a good beach and is only 15 minutes from the airport.

Cyprus is the perfect place to make a recovery but there are no direct flights in winter so you would have to go via London Heathrow or something like that.

Try the likes of Go Hop for flights. It's sunny, relaxing, friendly people, good food. In the EU so hospital is free (get that card). Very lovely historic place.
