Sony Vaio Charging problem.

    My 4 year old Sony Vaio will not take a charge or work using the adaptor it worked fine on battery but when battery died so did it. Adaptor is fine and will work on other machines.
    Can't find out much about the problem and some even suggest that it is a software problem. I need to get some sensitive files off machine and wonder can I get a stand alone battery charger or can anyone help with some advice. Need to get files off before leaving it for repair.
    Any thoughts?
