2010 with low mileage having major issues with Diesel Filter?

My wife has a new 2010 Polo. She is doing very little mileage (to and from schools) on a daily basis. Has had a few issues with the Diesel Filter light coming on, recommendation was to run in 2nd/3rd gear at 1900-2000rpm for a few mnutes until light went off. This has worked normally. Car however went into limp mode night before last, VW towed tog garage and only fix was a software upgrade.

Anyone else experiencing similar issues or is this a 'one off' or is it solely down to the type of driving.

    I would appreciate any feedback.

I think you mean Diesel Particulate filter....??
Short runs do not suit diesel cars with Particulate filters...At normal running temperatures you need the take the car for a run so it can carry out a dpf regeneration...ideally keep the revs around 2-3k revs over a 10km run so it can preform a dpf regeneration.
Maybe wait and see what the software download does...:)

That't the typical effect when enviromental requirements go ahead of the technology.
They have to use technology (DPF) which is quite faulty, but that seems to be the only way to obtain little emissions required by law.
You should have know it, before you bought modern diesel for short runs.

Even when doing long runs, people seem to have problems with DPF (Diesel Particule Filter).
I know in Poland (where car testing isn't as strict as here) many people just get rid of DPF to make their cars work properly.

Although you're looking at a cost of 1,000+ to have the DPF removed and sensors deactivated you'll also get the benefit of a higher MPG.

This is going to become a bigger problem, all cars from 1st Jan 11 will by law, have to have a DPF (Euro Step 5). You either remove it, which may cause EML problems, or just drive the car hard every so often, but that still may not stop it failing.

    Just use this:

    http://www.dipetane.ie/Default.aspx

Its an Irish based fuel additive.
I bought a Peugeot 407 HDi, its particulate filter light would come on under heavy acceleration, got a discount on the car because the cost of replacement was factored in. So I done a bit of research and have started using dipetane, no more warning lights and improved mpg, nothing major but an improvement.

Just my experience, its €13 for a bottle of it which will cover about 200 litres of fuel, cheaper than replacing filters or software.
And I have my NCT next Saturday so would be happy to report back with results?

Advice in UK motoring columns is for low mileage drivers to buy petrol engined cars because of the DPF problem.

Interesting ....What milage have you on the 407..? Dpf's on the 1.6 and 2.0 hdi's usally start to block around 100 -120k mls.

Peugeot have been using dpf's on there 607 2.2.hdi's(since 2001) and have been pretty reliable other than failing sensors and the fact that they start to block around 120k mls.
They use an additive which is injected into the diesel to reduce the burning temp of the soot in the dpf which inturn burns off quicker.(regens quicker)

I think dpfs are here to stay like Catalytic converters are on Petrol cars...:(

There are different options out there like ecu remaps ,this basically removes all monitoring on all dpf related sensors and the triggering of the dpf regeneration process...of course the dpf physically needs to be removed also.

But..there maybe problems with emissions in the future as dpf's are there to reduce the emissions and the fact that Nct testing is getting strictor i'm thinking there could be alot failures in the future with cars that have there dpf systems disabled....I maybe wrong.

    Hey Row,

It's got 105k kms on it and its going like a dream now. I will be monitoring things over the coming months, but happy with dipetane so far.

I have seen industrial oil burners that were using Dipetane for years and i have to say the burned very clean leaving little or no soot.
May give it a go on my own 407....:)

Its going for its first NCT Saturday, not due until january but might as well get it done while theres nothing worng, (touch wood) and Biffo will probably make it more expensive or more difficult to pass after budget!
I'll report back with emissions results, hopefully they will pass ok?

Ensure to check lower balljoints as they are a common failure on the
407's...other than that you should be fine....:)
Best of luck with the test...;)

    Thanks Row

How would I know if there was a problem? Would there be a knocking sound or anything? Because its tight as a drum.

Just done the NCT and it passed not a bother.

Smoke was 0.6/m out of allowed 2.5/m, I think thats good but have nothing to guage it against!

    Great stuff...:)
The Smoke level seems well within its limit....

Got a bit nervous because I was checking levels oil, water etc and noticed a small oil leak around what I think is the turbo, hopefully its just some sort of seal or something?

The turbos can get covered in black soot on the 1.6 hdi's as the turbo to dpf top clamp can leak past exhaust gases...there is a modified clamp available from peugeot.
I'd be guessing the engine breather to turbo intake hose maybe leaking some oil....this can be a common oil leak source.
