iTunes (10.1) sync still sticks on the backup step

I have an iTouch running iOS 4.1, I have just updated to iTunes 10.1 but it still jams up when doing the backup as the first step of a sync. The progress bar runs across to the right and almost always stops at about 90%, I then have about a minutes to click the 'x' at the end of the progress bar a few times, after about 20 seconds the sync. will resume and complete.

If I leave the backup step stuck on 90% for a couple of minutes or more, it's too late to click on the 'x' at the right end of the progress bar and nothing will wake it up, even clicking on File/Exit won't stop iTunes and a reboot is required.

    Any suggestions?

What PC are you using? I had a similar problem with a Samsung net book, but i found leaving it for about 5 to 8 minutes it would sync ok. Pain yes.
