My brother has two small unused appartments overhead stables on his farm. As the oil heating is permanently off is there some kind of antifreeze that i could circulate through the system to stop rads/pipes etc freezing up over the expected hard winter?
A few rads burst last year and i have those turned off. Had both systems running today, Just worried about a repeat of last year..

put it in the system and leave the pump on even with the boiler turned off so the water is always circulating.. shouldnt freeze then

Thanks for your reply. Would a gallon do per system (large tank plus four rads in each apt) or how much would be reccomended? If the systems were well dosed and well circulated wouldn't it be ok to leave it totally off as in a parked up car?

hard to say really, depends on the weather, if it was on like twice a day for 15-20mins each even it would do. I wouldn't committ to saying yeah it will be fine cos who knows? dosage.. not sure really you would need to read the bottle its not something i've used on its own before as the inhibitor has it built into it these days iirc.

This is what we use to suggest as well.

However we were later advised by a boiler manufacturer not to leave the pump permant running as it can overheat and depending on its location start a boiler fire. This may cause an issue when it comes to insurence pay out...

I would get a timer fitted to the pump and run it for 1 hour intervals about 8 times a day this gives you an hour running every 3. This would never allow it enough time to freeze especially with the anti freeze in it...

Alternatively if the apts are empty have the heating system emptied and refill it if there is a chance they will be let. You can empty it yourself I am sure a plumber will charge you no more than a days work if s/he has to come back
