Played a Blacktop Tele in Musicmaker today. Neck was lovely and had a very similar feel to my American Standard Tele. Pickups were a bit muddy. Would be an amazing guitar with a pickup swap.

I'd probably just buy another Mex Strat and change the scratch plate and pickups.

I don't see any benefits to buying this guitar, and doing it the other way would give you the option to choose your own humbuckers to suit your sound and also to re-fit the single coils if you wanted to go back to a "pure" Strat.

The blacktop is cheaper than a Mex Standard Strat, has a 22 fret neck that I personally found nicer than any Mex Standard neck I've ever played, plus has the nicer Fender spaghetti logo which I'm a sucker for. It also has a swimming pool route so you could make it into a s/s/s guitar if you wanted.

edit: I have serious GAS for this now:

It's not actually the cheapest Mex Strat (not on Thomann anyway):

    Blacktop:
    http://www.thomann.de/ie/fender_blacktop_stratocaster_hh_rw_bk.htm - €539

    Mex 60s Strat:
    http://www.thomann.de/ie/fender_mex_60s_strat.htm - €489
    2009 Mex Strat:
    http://www.thomann.de/ie/fender_std_stratocaster_rw_bk_2009.htm - €507
Or a Mex Strat with a HB already in it:
    http://www.thomann.de/ie/fender_stdstratocaster_hss_rwbk_2009.htm - €525

    Here's the range of guitars:

I'll take your point on the 22 fret neck (if that's important to you), I haven't played it so I cant' comment on that, no opinion on the Fender logo.

True, you can make the Blacktop SSS if you want, as much as the other way around. You've also got the ability to pick up a s/h Mex Strat fairly easily and convert that as required.

Horses for courses I guess :D

Nice looking machine, never been a Jazzmaster fan but that looks like it would be worth a go.
