Every now again I notice a smallish amount of either smoke or steam (I'm not sure which) coming from the front of the bonnet.

What could be the possible causes of this? Should I go to a mechanic asap?

Sounds like a leaky coolant pipe. Is there a smell from the steam..

Edit: Check your water level if you havent done op.

Could be your radiator fan is not working and the engine is overheating in slow moving traffic, no problem once you are on the move.

This is an indication that your engine might be overheating, or is leaking oil/coolant.
It needs to be checked by a mechanic.
In the meantime, keep an eye on the car temperature guage. If it is higher than usual turn the heater on full blast @ its hottest setting - this will help a bit. If it goes into the red, stop the car for about 15-30 mins then drive slowly to a garage.

This is exactly what happened to me this week, drove through a load of water then when I stopped 10 minutes later, saw steam coming from the front. Took me a couple of minutes to figure it out!

No, I wasn't driving through any water.

I did check the coolant level and it's very low, so it might be a leaky pipe as some have mentioned.
