Rangas Let into the Zoo for Free this Weekend

Surprised there isn't a thread on this already.

    http://swns.com/dublin-zoo-gives-ginger-children-free-entry-to-orang-utan-weekend-121029.html
Dublin Zoo will offer all red-haired children under 16 and anyone dressed as an orangutan free entry to the zoo this weekend to highlight the plight of the great ape.
But the publicity stunt has been criticised for indirectly comparing red-haired people to primates and giving school bullies ammunition for playground taunts.
Jessica Bateman, a 25-year-old red head, said: “Red-headed children often have terrible experiences at school where they are singled out and picked on for being ‘different’.
“The destruction of self-esteem this causes is massively underestimated and can affect people for their whole lives.
“I understand they are trying to raise awareness for an important issue but singling out red heads isn’t the right way to do it.”
But Ciarán McMahon, the primate keeper at the zoo, defended the Orangutan Awareness Weekend.
She said: “The real point is raising awareness about these endangered animals that may be extinct in 10 years.”
Orangutans – which are among the cleverest primates – are heading towards extinction as a result of habitat loss, palm oil plantations and illegal pet trade.
The primate, which shares 97 per cent DNA with humans, could be the first Great Ape to be extinct

I don't understand why they had to single out red heads.

so red-headed children are basically the same as orangutans. They may have a point.

    I'm surprised they didn't offer them a motorboat:pac:

I wonder if they would dare try this stunt with Gorillas and....er.....children of a certain ethnic....

    Ah, nevermind.

I love Orang-Utans though. my fave of the great apes.

I think it's worth reposting the comment under the story
It's a shame that the Irish are now using the originally British racial stereotype of red haired people being somehow different against their own people as a form of bullying.

I also think it's shameful for the OP to use the derogatory title they have put on the thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,013 ✭✭✭Scarydoll

I mean could they let children in for free anyway? Surly they could raise awareness without having to insult people.

The orangutans are cute though. I hope they raise lots of money to help them.

The pc wall has finally tumbled!
Can we start comparing anyone to primates now?

    Fill in the blanks:

White people with black hair look like ________
    Asian people look like _______
    Black people look like ________
    Mexicans are _________

Such discrimination! Why should red haired kids get in for free? How about black and brown and blonde haired kids?

    I haven't looked like I'm under 12 years of age since I was about 6 :(

See, now I'm being discriminated against because I've dark hair and I'm an adult.

Ginger midgets get all the breaks

Nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.

In hindsight it probably wasn't the wisest thing for the zoo to have done. Some poor kid will probably be bullied because of this.

p.s. the red pandas are a hell of a lot cuter than the orangutangs.

Ranga from Orang-Utan, as per the stunt played by the Zoo.

Did people get as all up in arms at dumb blonde jokes as ginger/red haired people do?

    It's a very offensive term to Orang-Utans.

You should hold your head in shame, OP.

I'm ginger. I'm a really freckled ginger too. One dick* used to call me "Cornflakes".

The only problem I have with jokes about ginger people is that most of them are really bad and not funny at all.

Yeah, I was bullied at school about being ginger, but it only amounted to the usual dickheads making stupid and uneducated comments.
Had South Park been around when I was in school, I would have cited Cartman and explained how we will take over the world.

    *He was a neo-nazi.

Why is nobody worried about the monkeys?

It must be very traumatic being compared to ginges - not to mention allowing large numbers of ginges to come and view them.

    Hmm. Let me see.
A ginger person can dye their hair. A black person can appear in 2004's classic film White Chicks and a white person can do an Al Jolson.
I see how you came to that conclusion.

See. That's why I'm offended by ginger jokes.
    That wasn't funny at all.

    Try something original.
Allude to the fact that we're genetically linked to Neanderthals, and how the rest of the human race managed to evolve without having sex with a lower species or something.

If anything gingers should be punished and banned from the zoo, and public places.

    This is unfair.

Ah now in fairness Terry, that's not 100% accurate.

There were two black people in White Chicks pretending to be white.

Same (maybe not about the neo-nazi part though). everyone just keeps saying the same ginger jokes over and over again. i thought that south park episode was brilliant but it's kinda ruined now with everyone saying oh gingers have no souls
come up with something original ffs, and i'll probably laugh with ya.

    .

Apes my dear boy - which are our closest living relatives and are as distantly related to monkeys as we are.:)

PS: This if for a real good cause and should be supported as Orang-utans could be extinct in the wild within the next decade if illegal rainforest destruction in Indonesia for logging and Palm oil cultivation by multinationals continues at its current pace:(

That South Park episode was brilliant and the ultimate irony of it is that alot of fools mistook it as an anti-redhair thing but it was actually a pisstake on people who will discriminate against others based on their physical appearance.

Those guys are geniuses for coming up with the Cartman character. He is the perfect vehicle for highlighting all that is wrong with how people interact with each other.
